Split into seven groups. Use the definition and explanation of the concept from the guide. Groups are to turn the explanation of the concept into a flashy newspaper headline. It is meant to summarize the concept for others. That should take around 10 minutes. Afterward, groups should walk around the room reading the headlines of the other groups and talking about it with their peers.

1. The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. 2&3. I love the phrase 'who help to create a better world' because ultimately isn't that what we all want? Often with kids I think adults overlook them and they feel overlooked as if they can't create a better world until they're older. It feels like what all schools should be striving for. 4. I think this all perfectly connects to Lang & Lit because we have the opportunity to explore each section of the mission through the texts we read and the conversations we encourage in class.

For me the first sentence of the mission statement is the most important because it is centered on the student. Education is foremost about relationship for me and specifically the power of literature and language to expand and deepen the hearts and minds of young people. The phrase 'active, compassionate and lifelong learners' resonates the most powerfully for me, again, because it is the worthwhile outcome of our endeavors as educators. The key word in that phrase for me is 'compassionate' because I have known many, many highly educated people sorely lacking in compassion.

The section that moved me was about creating a better and more peaceful world. I believe that the IB can be an integral component for peace education. Awareness and deep thinking at the DP age can truly make a difference with the future of the world.

Looking at the mission statement, I am always drawn to the goals of the program: to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. This is the reason I became a teacher and is the reason I have always wanted to get back into the IB as an educator. While yes, the IB at the end of the day is an international education program with rigorous courses and assessments, its overarching goals are what set it apart from other programs like AP. Within English A we have the opportunity through our curriculum choices to be a part of that creation. Which voices and perspectives do we choose to elevate within our curriculum? What ideas do we draw our students attention to? How active is the dialogue in our classroom? IB sets us up with the framework to pursue this overarching goal “to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect” but it is our job as the IB educators in charge of developing our classroom settings to turn this into an action and not just a set of empty words.

Care and inquiry are the two components that I feel strong about when starting my work with a new cohort of IB students. Caring about one's own development and the world around is what drives the motivation to learn more and be open for taking up some risks. That the mission statement effectively promotes the idea of making Learner Profile to become an integral part of everyday teaching. And the most convenient yet effective way to do it through text exploration and more insightful studies of literary works.

The word "inquiring" stands out to me because it is the cornerstone of knowledge. When inquiry dies, it takes learning with it.The word also reminds us that the desire to know is much more important than knowing. The former opens up a world of the infinite while the latter can be quantified. I also appreciate the last sentence of the statement because it reminds us that the notion of "right" is a very subjective one. We must remember that others hold their convictions just as dearly as we hold ours. The statement reminds us that we should respect each other nonetheless.

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

A phrase that moved, engaged, provoked or was in some way meaningful to you: lifelong learners - this phrase is provocative to me in terms of educational discourse and how it is widely used in the mission statements in hundreds of international schools.

3. A word that captured your attention or struck you as powerful: the unwritten word of 'perspective' that is inferred, that knowledge is not about being 'right' or 'wrong' and that it encourages this balance between inquiring, thinking and challenging oneself beyond the expected answers to the expected questions. This also links to our subject in regards to the requirements that students are to learn with and from such a variety of text types, with a variety of tasks/assessments as well.

Hey everyone,

While I was plotting out my course on the planning document, I found that I had plenty of literature and unit ideas but was stumped on BOWs. Then I tried to work backwards from BOWs I like and found that I couldn't think of a work of literature I'd like to use.

This got me thinking about how I could more efficiently organize my thoughts and I came up with a template for individual unit plans to complement the overarching planning grid for Scope and Sequence.

I'd be excited to hear some thoughts on this and how it could be improved to be more reflective of the course.

Daniel
