Scenario:

"Layla is a third grade student who generally uses African American Vernacular English. Layla, like her parents and several of her friends, speak and write using this non-standard dialect. She will be taking the STAAR test in a few months and you worry that she may not be successful on the writing portion due to her dialect. At the same time, you know that her home dialect is a part of her identity and should not be prohibited."

Questions:

1. How can you help Layla to develop standard English, while still allowing her to maintain her identify?

2. In what instances, if any, might you encourage her to use standard English?

3. In what instances, if any, would it be alright for her to use her non-standard dialect?

4. Give specific examples of what this might look like in your classroom.
