“I got up and turned around in my tracks three times and crossed my breast every time; and then i tied up a lock of my hair with thread to keep witches away”- (Twain 3)

Rhetorical Device: Symbolism

This quote is taken from the first chapter and in this Huck details how much of a role religion plays in his living with the widow. This quote satirizes the stress that society places on religion. If god were so present, why would Huck feel the need to protect himself from witches.

By mocking this it influences the view of how everyone sees the world with religion and this gives a view of how their society is.

“ It was a new judge that had just come, and he didn’t know the old man; so he said courts musn’t interfere and separate families if they could help it; said he'd rather not take a child away from it father.” (Twain 16)

This quote is twain's comment on the judicial and court systems in the united states. It was obvious to all in the town that huck’s father was more than unfit, but because the new judge “did not know huck's father he would not separate him. Huck's future would depend upon who his guardian is , and it was up to a single person who was completely separate from and oblivious to huck's situation.

This excerpt influences the development of the chapter and also the whole book, because of this case, it influences what the child's behavior is going to be.

"Pretty soon a spider went crawling up my shoulder, and I slipped it off and it lit in the candle; and before I could budge it was all shriveled up. I didn't need anybody to tell me that that was an awful bad sign and would fetch me some bad luck, so I was scared and most shook the clothes off of me. I got up and turned around in my tracks three times and crossed my breast every time." (Chapter 1)

The spider crawling up the shoulder doesn't seem to directly lead to any specific problem, most likely on account of the ritual Huck performs shortly after. The mentioning of bad luck so early in the novel foreshadows impending bad events.

People in the book may believe this because of how much good luck they don't get every day so they don't want to disrupt anything like mother nature and receive bad luck. It is significant because, now in days we kill spiders everyday, because we are afraid and here he is trying not to kill it.

(Chapter 2).

this is a superstition because of how it shows a supernatural by showing a confounded Jim attempting to explain what happened to his hat. It may also be a veiled attempt at religious beliefs of the day.

People may believe in this superstition because they may need a higher power to protect them. It's significant because you don't see people in today's society who believe in witches.
