- Some known causes of anorexia is obsessive-compulsive personality traits. These traits can make it easier to stick to a strict diet and not eat even if you are hungry. Some people also have an extreme drive for perfectionism, causing them to think they're never thin enough. They may have high levels of anxiety and not eat in order to reduce it. Some other known causes of anorexia are when there is a trigger. For example, a traumatic event such as the breakup of a family, loss of a parent, or a painful emotional rejection. It can also start from social rejection or poor grades. These people feel like they have no control over their life, and the only thing they have control over is their weight. They become obsessed with losing weight because it makes them have a feeling of being in control.

-The environmental causes and triggers are peer pressure. Peer pressure may help fuel the desire to be thin, particularly among young girls. Also, when girls are praised for being skinny they feel good about themselves and they think they are finally good at something- losing weight. Boys may start to notice and girls may get jealous which makes them feel better about themselves so they continue to lose weight.

-The biological causes are still being researched but as of now it is proven that in some individuals who have eating disorders there are certain chemicals in the brain that control hunger, appetite, and digestion that have been found to be unbalanced.

-Anorexia typically begins just after puberty, although it can start as early as ages 8-10 and as late as middle age. Women are more likely to develop anorexia. Among the 3,714 women and 1,808 men who responded, men were more likely to report overeating whereas women were more likely to declare a loss of control while eating.

-The DSM V criteria for anorexia is , 1.
Treatment

-There are several treatments/therapies for people struggling with anorexia. Some common treatments/therapies are cognitive behavioral therapy, medical nutrition therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, art therapy, dance movement therapy, equine therapy, exposure and response prevention therapy, family therapy, and interpersonal psychotherapy therapy. Some common medications are fluoxetine (prozac) and olanzapine (zyprexa).

-The best treatment/therapy is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. This therapy is short term, goal oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands on, practical approach to problem solving. This therapy helps one see how their thinking and negative opinion on themselves can have a big impact on their eating and negative behaviors. During the session, the client and therapist work together to understand what the problems are and develop new strategies for tackling them. CBT introduces patients to a set of principles that they can apply whenever they need to, and that’ll last them a lifetime. This therapy should be used when one is struggling from an eating disorder, anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anger problems.

-GenPsych treats this disorder. They provide meal planning with a registered dietitian, daily supervised meals, individual and group therapy, vital sign and weight monitoring with a registered nurse, and medication management with a board-certified mental health provider. Participants receive education to help them recover from their eating disorder, including groups such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotion Regulation, Relapse Prevention, and Body Image. Through individual and group treatment, participants will decrease eating disorder symptoms, learn balanced eating, and develop healthy ways to cope.
