Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger games is a perfect example of self reliance. When chosen to participate in these brutal games, she relied on her talents using the bow and arrow to protect herself and to find food. In her district, necessities needed to survive were scarce and Katniss had to go into the forest to find things she needed for herself and for her family. With many years years of practice, she adapted skills in the forest that she could bring to the arena of the games. She also adapts to the society she lives in at district 12 by learning how to hunt and find necessary items needed, another example of her self reliance. "The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried." This represents Katniss in her journey throughout the movie. Katniss has the skills needed to win the game, however, only she knows if she can transfer these skills in such a brutal arena, where she might have to kill animals and potentially humans to protect herself and be the final victor.

Brave by Sarah Bareilles

A song with many comparisons to the ideas in Emerson's essay is "Brave", by Sarah Bareilles. This song encourages the same idea as the essay to "Trust thyself" through all your adventures or hardships in life. This song promotes listeners to "say what you wanna say," which can be connected to Emerson's essay when he promotes his readers to "speak what you think today in words as hard as cannon balls." Both the song and the essay are encouraging readers and listeners to trust yourself in the many decisions you will make. Both also encourage you to speak your mind and to not let surrounding opinions affect your personal judgment.

Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock was a successful artist known for his abstract pieces who are sold for millions. His artwork is said to be magnificent and ingenious but also is misunderstood. Many who don't understand his art are quick to judge because it seems as if he just splattered paint on a canvas. However, Pollock was extremely careful and distinctive when he painted, he painted on top of layers and layers of paint which took him a long period of time. This corrects peoples opinions that Pollock wascareless and free spirited in his work for his was just the opposite.
