In the 1600’s there was a global change that would alter how we view the world forever. The Scientific Revolution was a revolution that took place from the 1500’s-1800’s that challenged the laws of the natural world. Countless findings were produced during this time period including the discovery of the telescope and the law of gravity. Initially starting in Europe this revolution quickly spread around the globe, and soon the concept of observing our natural surroundings became embedded in our global society. The Scientific Revolution created long lasting social change because of the inspiration it caused for others to counter the common ideas of society, it created scientific findings that helped future scientific research, and it completely changed the perception that individuals had about the Catholic church and Bible.

Inspiration from the Scientific Revolution

This image depicts Nicolaus Copernicus’ sketch supporting his theory that the sun was stationary and all other planets revolved around the sun. This picture shows how the Scientific Revolution inspired people to observe and challenge natural law because it presents the findings of a scientist who personally was inspired by the findings of Galileo and made a revolutionary finding. Galileo was an accredited astronomer who is most famously known for the creation of the telescope and the finding of Jupiter. He was considered so revolutionary that NASA sent a mission to Jupiter in the 1990’s and their mission after him. Copernicus was inspired by his discovery of the telescope. Copernicus then used Galileo's telescope to help conclude his theory of the Sun being stationary. Before Copernicus society believed that the earth was stationary and all planets revolved around the earth, but instead the sun was stationary, and all planets orbited the sun. In conclusion this picture shows how the Scientific Revolution created inspiration because it shows an example of an astronomer who got inspired by another astronomer.

Contradiction Between the Catholic Church and the Scientific Revolution

This picture depicts Galileo explaining his findings of the telescope and the founding of other planets. The other character represents the catholic church and shows him thinking that Galileo is not correct. This picture shows how the Scientific Revolution challenged the bible's beliefs because when Galileo and other scientists were publishing their findings the church never believed in their findings because the Bible had other countering beliefs. As you can predict this caused a lot of conflict with individuals and the church. The church classified both Galileo’s and Newton’s findings as heresy meaning it was contrary to the religion. The church also, in 1633, made Galileo publicly announce that his findings were incorrect although they were true. Also in that same year the church tried to convict Galileo for the strong suspicion of heresy which resulted in a trial not even lasting a day, and with the ruling that Galileo was not guilty. Later in 1992 the Vatican Church finally announced they were incorrect about Galileo's Findings and that they were in fact correct. In conclusion, this picture is a political cartoon that depicts the long lasting social change the Scientific Revolution created.

Galileo was an scientist and astronomer in the 1600’s who's findings sparked an entire evolution of human thinking. He was credited with founding of multiple planets, and began to inspire many other people. His findings in the 1600’s inspired people for centuries after his passing in 1642. For example it is said that Ludovico Cigoli was inspired by Galileo when painting a work that was meant to depict a scene through a telescope. He was inspired by Galileo. Even in today's modern society there are many corporations named after Galileo. For example the Galileo Project is a program where they try to advance scientific and technological research within France and Italy.

Isaac Newton was a professor of mathematics at Trinity College, and had been credited for two main theories. Newton in 1670, discovered that light is composed of rays of varying length. After his light ray theory, soon he published a work in 1687 in which he discussed his theory of gravitation. Newton's theory was that objects with larger masses stay central and do not float in the air. He used this to explain why the earth orbits the sun, and why the sun does not orbit the earth. One additional important finding that Newton made was countering the common belief that the earth was made of just water, fire, air, and earth. Newton recognized instead that objects were made of atoms.
