With this picture I wanted to capture three main elements which have been an integral part of my growth path and which well describe the story of my life:
1. My hiking boots
2. My Scout's neckerchief
3. The World Scout Emblem
Indeed, I have been a Scout since I was 8 years old and I am currently volunteering as a Scout Leader for a small community in my city, where I am directly involved in the promotion of responsible consumption, care for the environment, co-operation and integrity among children and adolescents. It is here, where I first decided on the career path and life I want to lead, immersing myself in sustainability issues and learning delivery.

I thought the best way to represent my life right now is a snapshot of my twice-weekly commute. I'm still trying to hold on to my personal life where I used to live, with the transition back to onsite work at my duty station.

Colleagues are often surprised I'm willing to commute 3 hours twice a week, but as an American, commuting has always been a major part of my life. When I first started taking the train regularly instead of being forced to drive, I realized how so many facets of life are influenced by how we get around.

Now, I see my train commute as an opportunity for me to reflect on how I actually use my time and how I would like to use my time. Not having to focus on the road and being able to read, or sleep, or work on the train has actually brought an element of tranquility to my life that I didn't have before.

The best picture which can visually capture my life in these days would be this lighting aromatic candle at my room. With the COVID-19 restrictions imposed for around one year, I have learned to adapt myself to work from home and make efforts in improving my surroundings in the way that I have never done before. Sharing a tiny apartment with my husband and spending most of my time out of home, I never thought of how I could improve the environment in my room to make it more cozy. With the COVID-19 stayed for a year, I became a fan of aromatic candles, I learned how to make various recipes of coffee, I rearranged my workspace - I learn that we can design an environment we want to live in if we pay more attention to things around us.

However, most importantly my day begins with exercise - rain or sunshine. I usually go our to walk and during that time I pray, meditate and plan my day. I usually put in at least 10,000 steps in a day and by the time I return home, my day is set in stone.
I try to eat right, think of something I am grateful for and one good turn I can do by close of the day.

This is a photo from my evening 'good for your health' walk between my place and my parents place in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sarajevo is notoriously in a valley, surrounded by mountains, which was well exploited during one of the longest sieges in the history of warfare. I have a habit of always looking above, into the sky, while walking - partly to lift away that sense of being closed by mountains, and partly to remind myself to breathe in the freedom and peace we now have. 26 years ago, I spent my childhood looking into that same sky counting missiles and flying bullets. Today I look at it thankful for where are we right now, how far we got to, and working with a pledge for a better world in which no child loses their childhood to war.

As an employee of the ILO, I was witnessing child labour first hand and I could do nothing about it. I felt helpless. He was his families’ primary breadwinner and needed to work to support his family. The disturbing reality was that he needed to work in order to eat. This along with other encounters during my travels has motivated me to continue to advocate for social issues everyday and volunteer in every country that I travel.

The first time I visited the UN HQ I was 11 years old and I decided in that moment that I was going to work at the UN. Fast forward 20 years, in 2019, I won a journalism fellowship to report at the UN for three months during the UNGA. And then two years after that, I'm working at the UNHCR telling their story in Trinidad and Tobago. This photo to me symbolises that power of manifestation, not in the cheesy buzzword that you see on Pinterest or Instagram, but like one of those theory of change charts we learnt about in the first module. It still blows my mind that I can work for this organisation for the good of humanity, and no matter what people think about the value of the UN, I'm proud to be here. (Background to this photo: I'm on the right. We were actually supposed to have a very brief photo call with the SG, but because of a time mix up, we missed it but the fates aligned and we ended up still getting one when we met him in a hallway)

I left home at the stage of 12 and since then I have not stayed put in one place, which meant meeting and knowing a lot of people and all kinds – good bad ugly, but mostly it has been beautiful. And I love making soulful portraits; capturing faces in and with rawness and in their moment, which is honest and unfiltered. My faith in people is unshaken. People are the most valuable asset that we have, i.e., US.
There's no option to add another picture; if I could I'd a photo of my every growing personal library. It really describes my life perfectly, as I have realized most of it is dedicated to smashing the patriarchy, and changing the narrative of society which opresses women. While I was walking around the city, I stumbled across this grafitti, and it was perfect for a photo, as I love street art, and grafitti as a form of subversive art, and I have never before encountered one. So, this is it - the story of my life is feminism, working every day to smash the patriarchy, and loving all of the cats in the world at the same time (but I couldn't upload two pictures :).

This road leads to different refugee farms where they plant vegetables that they then provide to different part of Belize. They have to walk back with their produce before getting back to the center of the village. This reflects the passion I have for helping vulnerable people who are kind, friendly, hard-working, and don't deserve go through displacement. It also shows my love for exploring and learning about new places, especially those in nature. This gives a depiction of my work but also my personality, my passions, and my interests.

Even though the photo is ten years old, it still represents the way I feel about life - balancing on the border of civilization and something beyond the reality we find ourselves entangled in, trying to figure out what we are actually doing here and why we are doing that. I like to believe that we are collectively working towards identifying the underlying root of all the suffering that manifests as the social symptoms the UN is busy alleviating. This is a personal and a societal journey simultaneously.

For me, life is a constant search for balance, even if that balance is never an end point - it's always in motion. I chose this image because the ocean is where I feel most alive. In water sports, I learn that there are days to flow with the current and enjoy the view; but sometimes the waters are choppy and requires courage and action, focus and determination. There are good days, and bad days, and neither lasts forever. But as they say, the best surfer is the one who has the most fun, who is aware in the present to live every moment. The connection with nature and with people around me, with my family and friends, is what makes sense in this life. That's why, in the professional field, I dedicate a good part of my life to raising awareness on the environment, giving voice to causes and stimulating action. In my personal life, nature is my source of energy, it's where I find myself and get inspired to evolve as a human being.

From the age of 12, I always liked to watch sunrise and sunset and have captured them countless times.

After hitting 20s, an addition was moon gazing. I took this picture last week when I woke up at 3 am, out of nowhere and witnessed the majestic view to capture—kind of moon calling.

After gazing at it for hours, I realized that many people worldwide might be facing challenging times, and through this, I am sending the strength and power to stay strong and persistent.

The foot has grown bigger!
Feeling the whole happiness lies in your hand right now. I'm holding my son's foot in 2018 and it was a kind of new enjoyment which I felt for the third time. Staying with the family everyday can not be compensated in any way. Forgetting and not trying for foreign missions due to the glue attached with my kids can not be narrated more than this pic.

Over the years, I have traversed the world telling humanitarian stories that, hopefully, will result in people being helped. While I know words are powerful and moving, I also know that a good photo tells a compelling story. Indeed, "a picture is worth a thousand words." My camera has therefore become my companion, capturing what words sometimes can't express. I also like that the camera takes both still photographs and videos, which gives me the opportunity to use various media.

This photograph was taken by my niece during a moment of relaxation, but it captures my story well, because wherever I go, I take my camera with me so I don't miss the opportunity to capture crucial moments.

Life is long, and I am not sure I can sum it up in one picture. But I do think I can sum up the last two year of my life in a picture, and this one does the trick. A lot of what my work had revolved around, lately, is getting together with people, civil society, members of communities willing to make a difference, taking them by the hand, and walking them through the different steps needed to make their lives and those of the people around them better. It is a very individual process that requires patience, but this is how we all learn and grow and acquire the skills to move forward.

I took this photograph in July last year to CERF funded Forecast Based Financing programme. And I met this beautiful family. I have spend a day with them to know whats happening, how they are 'surviving'. It was a day well spent. Not because I was able to capture their 'suffering', but I have seen a beautiful family with their dreams, care and affection to each other. I have seen the resilience. One of the many reasons, I started photography is- my camera allows me to go to someone's personal space and to see and experience their life to tell my own story. Of course I am aware of the power balance, me being with a camera. But I am grateful to these amazing people- for allowing me to be there with them and experience life, struggle, love and little joy even in the worst possible situation.
