Dashiell Hammett was known for his "hard boiled detective novels". He was also known for his screenplays, short stories, and his political activism. His writing was particularly notable because it was focused on realism and political activism. He often wrote about things that were of concern in the world. In addition to being an author, he was an anti-fascist and a communist. He became a part of the blacklist because he was a distinguished communist. He often spoke out about his beliefs, which is what landed him in so much trouble. During McCarthy's reign of hysteria against communism, Hammett was blacklisted and even imprisoned after refusing to testify against four fellow communists.
