State the issues regarding global energy demand and consumption trends.
The world depends on fossil fuels for almost everything, e.g. Industry, Agriculture, Transport etc.

Give examples of alt. energy sources.

Political: Geopolitics of resources. The distribution of non-renewables is uneven so many countries have to import to meet their demands, habitats can be affected by infrastructure such as pipelines. (Canada Trans Mountain Pipeline)

Economic: Alternative energy sources are cheaper but more expensive to set up. Since non-renewables are finite, alternative energy sources are beneficial to the economy in the long run.

Environmental: Although alt. energy sources are often renewable and not finite, they can have other environmental damaging effects other than GHG emissions and such. E.g. Dams can flood vast areas causing habitat loss. Wind turbines are hazardous to birds. (Dams and diversions in the Balkans drying up rivers and damaging wildlife)

Social: alt. energy sources e.g. HEP can flood areas and displace people, potentially driving them to urban areas, which creates other environmental issues. Some people are unhappy about the visual pollution of wind turbines, this dissatisfaction affects the demand of alt. energy.

Conclusion: While alt. energy sources are less environmentally impactful in terms of GHG emission and other impacts on climate change; they can have negative impacts on the environment still, such as habitat loss and damage to wildlife.

Renewable:
Supply will not run out. Although renewable, can be expensive especially when limited by geographic location (Wind, Solar, geothermal, tidal, hydroelectric) so it is not accessible to a large number of people. Does not produce emissions and has low environmental impact.

Non-renewable:
Not geographically limited so is accessible to most. cheaper than renewable but a lot less environmentally friendly. Limited supply therefore once exhausted, anything relying on the resource will stop, creating further issues
Not only will burning fossil fuels exhaust the resource, but the process of burning them release greenhouse gases, primary and secondary pollutants which contribute to climate change and the enhanced greenhouse effect, as well as tropospheric ozone.

Give statistics about LIC's + HIC'S and their energy sources percentages over the last decade.

The short term benefit of using fossil fuels is that it boosts economy and meets demand.
The long term benefit of using alternative energy sources is that it provides sustainable energy security for the future which is renewable and does not contribute to climate change.
