What is the nature of man?

Socrates felt all humans naturally strive after happiness, which would determine all their future actions. He also believed we naturally tended to settle for the status quo answer, instead of elaborating or even attempting to find the sole root of an issue. On a more senical approach, Socrates felt that people were naturally greedy, prioritizing wealth and social status, and that money tended to overpower virtues when people came into large sums of wealth; which would lead to evil acts that are done out of ignorance and done involuntarily. People have false beliefs about what will make them happy so when they commit crimes such as robbing a bank, they think the money will make them happy which will actually hurt them in the long run, because their ignorance doesn’t allow them to know that being virtuous will bring them the ultimate happiness.

What is truth? Is it necessary?

I don’t think Socrates was as interested in finding one absolute truth, but instead accomplishing the deepest understandings in life, which would then lead to a virtuous life which would then lead to a happy life, which is ultimately what all humans strive for. Self-knowledge was the hardest to obtain because it required being completely aware of your inner nature but also how society around you guides you life. In Socrates opinion, there was one supreme good, virtue, which could be attained if one had obtained total self awareness. Socrates absolutely felt that knowing the truth was necessary especially because one of his goals was to rid those he spoke to of ignorance because he believed false truths were dangerous. Part of knowing the truth is by seeing things as they are instead of living behind a false reality that could potentially be harmful to society.

Socrates is most commonly known for his belief that the truth is naturally within each of us, we just aren’t aware of it. He used the Socratic Method when conversing with others to unveil answers and thoughts they never knew they were capable of coming up with. Socrates also heavily valued the use of reason and logic when seeking answers because he chose to see things as they were, rather than how we wished to see them.

What is the role of government?

Socrates looked down on Democracy for the most part seeing how he did not agree with the fact that anyone should be able to choose the leaders of society. He believed only the virtuous and educated should be able to vote and run for candidacy. If anyone can vote, people will naturally choose those who say what they want to hear rather than what is needed for the benefit of society. Socrates definitely favored Oligarchy over Democracy because he liked the idea of a small group of elite people having control over society, a group was chosen by their wealth, education or heritage. Oligarchs did not necessarily have complete power and would sometimes only exert their power by economic means. In Socrates ideal government he would argue for restricted freedom of movement, strict censorship according to moralistic virtues, a guardian soldier class and the rule of philosopher kings.
