One way to improve emotional health is to spend time in nature. This includes taking a hike in the mountains, walking on a beach, or strolling through a park. Nature can boost your mood and even lower stress and blood pressure, which is why it is so beneficial. Unfortunately, many teens live far from good parks or nature preserves, making it hard to enjoy the outdoors. If there is an adequate place near you, however, then spending some time there is a great way to boost emotional health!

If you can’t spend time with nature, then you may find that simply developing a positive outlook on life will help boost emotional health. To do this, focus on the good events in your life and shift negative thoughts into something more positive. For example, see mistakes or disappointments as opportunities to learn and grow, not a major crisis. Obsessing over the negative aspects of your life can trigger anxiety and depression, which is why staying positive can help improve emotional health. However, this is easier said than done. Sometimes being optimistic can be extremely difficult, but just trying to maintain a positive outlook is beneficial.

Intellectual Health

Developing new skills or interests is a great way to boost intellectual health. To do this, you need to try and discover hidden talents you may have by trying new things. Joining classes or clubs, watching how-to videos, or visiting places to inspire you (e.g. art museums, a play or musical) can help you do this. Learning new skills gives you a sense of ability and adventure, which improves your self-esteem and mental health. However, it may be hard to find the time to do this, especially if you are already busy with school or other after school activities. Also, it is hard to get over the “learning curve” to really get into something new.

Another way to boost intellectual health is playing games, specifically games that require thought or creativity. Some examples of these types of games are charades, which develops creativity, quizzes on the internet that test general knowledge, and solving math or logic puzzles. This can help improve intellectual health in a fun, sometimes cooperative way, and could develop into an interesting hobby. However, the often busy schedules of students along with distractions like phones or mindless video games may get in the way of doing this. One needs to set aside time to play, which may be hard to do.
