Depicting an angel expelled from heaven by God, the painting shows a saddened Lucifer, with his hands crossed and tears running from his eyes. He lies on the ground, naked, while angels fly in the sky above to show the glory of God.

Starry night was painted by the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh in June 1889.

It depicts the view Van Gogh had while he was in psychiatric hospital. When he was sleepless he painted this wonderful painting. He paints the moon, stars, houses, a bell tower and a cypress. He used shades of blue and yellow. He also used circles on his painting. It is now on the museum of modern art in New York city.

In 2007 Italian musician Giovanni Pala claimed that da Vinci hid a musical composition in her work. Pala painted a pentagram on a copy of the work. Then he thought that the bread and the hands of Christ and the Apostles could express a musical note. The choice of these two was made because the bread symbolizes the body of Christ, while the hands bless the food.When he tried to see if any particular sound was actually produced, he was disappointed, as the notes did not connect together harmoniously. So, he decided to try playing them backwards, from right to left. Pala created a 40-second tune that, as he said in an interview with the American news agency Associated Press, "looks like a requiem, with a funeral procession."

THE POTATO EATERS

The Potato Eaters is an oil painting by Vincent van Gogh painted in April 1885 in Nuenen, Netherlands.Van Gogh said he wanted to depict peasants as they really were. He deliberately chose coarse and ugly models, thinking that they would be natural and unspoiled in his finished work.There were 3 versions of this masterpiece. Thieves stole the early version of The Potato Eaters, the Weaver's Interior, and Dried Sunflowers from the Kröller-Müller Museum in December 1988. In April 1989, the thieves returned Weaver's Interior in an attempt to gain a $2.5 million ransom. The police recovered the other two on 14 July 1989, no ransom was paid.

This delightful oil on canvas was composed by the great Regency painter Edmund Blair Leighton. Like many of Leighton’s genre scenes, Till Death Us Do Part is a humorous portrayal of male-female interaction. Walking down the aisle of their wedding ceremony, a beautiful young woman in a period dress links arms with her new husband, a gentleman several years her senior. The artist exhibited this work at the Royal Academy in 1879, and when he first sent it to the Academy, he gave it the incisively sarcastic title “L.S.D.,” standing for the Latin phrase “librae, solidi, denarii.” The phrase translates to “pounds, shillings, pence,” suggesting the woman is marrying for money rather than affection.

Elaborately detailed, the monumental canvas is filled with wedding guests who whisper and flash disapproving looks, wearing comical expressions ranging from worry to dazed confusion. The bride casts her eyes downward as the “well-wishers” look on, avoiding the gaze of a particular young man to her right. Was this forlorn fellow her true love? The scene does imply that it was they who were once to be married. The old groom (humorously painted as a self-portrait of the artist) stares ahead, his face blank, oblivious to their connection. Although no one looks happy on this occasion, Leighton is able to infuse the work with the rich narrative detail and his trademark sense of humor that make his canvases an absolute pleasure to view.

Leighton first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1878, beginning a period of over four decades in which he was represented by over sixty famous paintings and artworks at the Royal Academy’s summer annuals.

The Old Guitarist is an oil painting by Pablo Picasso, which he created in late 1903 and early 1904. It depicts an elderly musician, a haggard man with threadbare clothing, who is hunched over his guitar while playing in the streets of Barcelona, Spain. It is on display at the Art Institute of Chicago as part of the Helen Birch Bartlett Memorial Collection.

The house depicted in the painting is known as the Olson House in Cushing, Maine, and is open to the public, operated by the Farnsworth Art Museum.It is a National Historic Landmark and has been restored to match its appearance in the painting, although Wyeth separated the house from its barn and changed the lay of the land for the painting. Wyeth is buried in the Olson family graveyard, not far away.

Girl with a Pearl Earring represents a young woman in a dark shallow space, an intimate setting that draws the viewer’s attention exclusively on her. She wears a blue and gold turban, the titular pearl earring, and a gold jacket with a visible white collar beneath. Unlike many of Vermeer’s subjects, she is not concentrating on a daily chore and unaware of her viewer. Instead, caught in a fleeting moment, she turns her head over her shoulder, meeting the viewer’s gaze with her eyes wide and lips parted as if about to speak. Her enigmatic expression coupled with the mystery of her identity has led some to compare her to the equivocal subject in Leonardoda Vinci’s Mona Lisa . A young woman might have sat for Vermeer, but the painting is not meant to portray her or any specific individual in the same way that Leonardo’s piece portrayed an existing person. Vermeer’s subject is a generic young woman in exotic dress, a study in facial expression and costume. The work attests to Vermeer’s technical expertise and interest in representing light. The soft modeling of the subject’s face reveals his mastery of using light rather than line to create form, while the reflection on her lips and on the earring show his concern for representing the effect of light on different surfaces.

In August 1930, Grant Wood, an American painter with European training, was driven around Eldon,Iowa by a young local painter. Looking for inspiration, he noticed the Dibble House , a small white house built in the Capenter Gothic architectural style, and  decided to paint the house along with, in his words, "the kind of people he fancied should live in that house”. It depicts a farmer standing beside his daughter. The figures were modeled by Wood's sister Nan Wood Graham  and their dentist Dr. Byron McKeeby. The woman is dressed in a colonial print apron evoking 20th-century rural Americana while the man is adorned in overalls covered by a suit jacket and carries a pitchfork. It is one of the most famous American oil- paintings of 20^th century and has been widely parodied in American culture.

Witold Pilecki was a brave Polish soldier who did something extraordinary. In 1940, he volunteered to be sent to the terrible Auschwitz concentration camp. Why? He wanted to learn about the terrible things happening there and help the prisoners fight back.

Life in Auschwitz was brutal. Every day, Pilecki faced the threat of death. Despite this, he secretly wrote about the horrors he saw and organized a resistance movement. After almost three years, he risked his life to escape and tell the world about the terrible truth.

Pilecki's courage helped expose the Holocaust and inspired others to fight against evil. His story reminds us that even in the darkest times, people can choose to be heroes.

The Bedroom is one of Vincent van Gogh's most famous works, created in 1888 during his time in Arles, France. In this painting, the artist depicts his personal bedroom, which he designed with the intent of evoking feelings of calm and simplicity. Through the bold and expressive colors, mainly the vibrant yellows and blues, he offers the viewer a sense of a serene atmosphere. The large bed with simple furniture, the pale lavender walls, and the distinctive checkered floor create a harmonious ambiance, while the absence of shadows enhances the dreamlike quality of the scene.

Van Gogh himself, in his letters, mentions that he wanted to capture his bedroom as a quiet and almost ceremonial space. The bright and contrasting colors, such as the yellow of the bed and the green of the window, are used to emphasize the feeling of peaceful rest and silent tranquility. The minimalist layout of the room, which includes only the essential furniture, reflects the artist’s desire to create a space that encourages comfort and serenity, offering a refuge from the stresses of the outside world.

This work, created during a period when van Gogh was facing personal struggles and emotional turmoil, reflects his need for mental balance and inner peace. The colors and simplicity of the space not only capture the artist’s external environment but also his inner world, making this piece particularly personal and emotional.

The Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault shows a tragic scene of shipwrecked men fighting for survival on a raft. The men are weak and desperate, surrounded by the vast, rough sea. The painting makes me feel sadness and helplessness as i imagine their suffering and struggle. It captures the pain of being lost and alone, with no hope in sight. Currently the painting is housed in the Louvre Museum

Set in 17th-century Delft, Netherlands, the story follows Griet, a young girl from a modest family who becomes a maid in the Vermeer household. As she navigates the complexities of the household, including Vermeer’s controlling wife and numerous children, Griet’s artistic eye and quiet intelligence catch the attention of the painter. She gradually becomes involved in his work, eventually posing for the masterpiece “Girl with a Pearl Earring.” The novel explores themes of art, class, desire, and the constraints of society, capturing the tension between personal ambition and societal limitations.

Her expressions coupled with the mystery of her identity has lead some people to compare her to Mona Lisa.

The painting depicts three individuals. A man holding an engangement ring meant for the girl he loves. She and her attendant are hidden behind a marble column, their expressions and attitude indicating eagerness.

The reason why I have chosen this painting is because even though it is set back in the time of the Roman Empire, the content of it can be considered modern. The times may have changed, yet the feelings of love, excitement, eagerness and anticipation in people's hearts when they are in love remain the same.

I chose this painting because it symbolizes the universal themes of love, intimacy, and spiritual union. The entwined couple, bathed in a golden aura, evokes to me feelings of passion, tenderness, and transcendence, suggesting a moment of perfect connection. The intricate patterns and rich textures elevate the embrace to something sacred, merging sensuality with spirituality. The painting resonates with me by capturing the beauty and depth of human connection in a dreamlike, timeless form.

The painting shows the young Infanta Margarita Teresa surrounded by two ladies of honor , a bodyguard , two dwarfs and a dog. Just behind them Velazquez depicts himself working on a large canva . In the background there is a mirror reflecting the upper bodies of the kig and queen although some scholars have speculated that their image is a reflection of the painting on which Velazquez is working . All of this takes place in a palace in Madrid.

Apart from the cruel expirement which leads to the death of the bird,which makes feel disgusted about the scientific community, I am even more concerned about the fact that only the little girls find it unethical , in a place full of well educated grown ups.

The near-touching hands create a moment of anticipation and connection, symbolizing the spark of life and the profound link between humanity and the divine. It also inspires reflection on creation, creativity, and the beauty of human potential. The grand scale and detail of the fresco further enhance feelings of admiration for Michelangelo’s artistic genius.

He was the original grey eminence, due to the colour of his robes (grey) and the way he adressed ( "Your Eminence", a title reserved only for cardinals, even though he never became one).

The phrase grey eminence is attributed to a powerful advisor or decision-maker who operates secretly or unofficially.

I chose this painting because it highlights the power and influence some people can accumulate without ever holding an official position or being noble or rich, and the respect they can come to command. The painter achieves this by having the most powful people in France bowing before him, a "humble" friar, and, most importantly, him ignoring them.

The painting depicts a couple locked in an intimate embrace, with the man kissing the woman’s cheek. They are surrounded by a lavish golden background and are draped in robes that shimmer with intricate patterns, which blend both the figures and the background together. The detailed patterns on their clothing are one of the standout features of the piece, with elements that suggest a fusion of symbolism, Byzantine mosaics, and Art Nouveau influences.

The title refers to an old sailing expression referring to a wave of incredible size that comes after a succession of incrementally larger waves.

It depicts a sea after a night storm and people facing death attempting to save themselves by clinging to debris from a wrecked ship.The debris , in the shape of the cross , appears to be a Cristian metaphor for salvation for the earthy sin. The painting has warm tones ,which reduce the sea’s apparent menacing overtones and a chance of the people to survive seems plausible .This painting shows both the destructiveness and beauty of nature . This painting makes me feel relaxed and worried at the same time .

Sturmtruppe geht unter Gas vor is a painting form Otto Dix collection Der Krieg. It shows a group of German Stormtroopers wearing Gas Masks advancing towards an enemy trench, arms ready.

It is considered one of the most brutal paintings depicting scenes from the 1st World war, as it is not rooted in fantasy, but in real events the painter experienced and saw with his own eyes when he fought as an artilleryman in the German army during WW1.

His use of black and white colouring, combined with manipulating the etching and aquatint mediums made his paintings more realistic, and horrifying, diffrentiating him from most contemporary painters.

Surrounding the couple are various attendants and onlookers, whose expressions range from indifference to curiosity. The priest officiating the ceremony stands on the left of the painting, interacting with the young bride, his face mostly obscured by shadows, adding to the overall gravity of the scene. This painting reveals that marriage is not always connected with love. It can be forced and unequal, as the painting is named.

Salvador Dalí was one of the most important Spanish painters. He was associated with the surrealist movement, of which he was a part for a period. He is considered one of the most famous artists of the 20th century and a very eccentric figure in contemporary art.

I chose this particular painting because the story behind the King's and the Queen's relationship always captured my interest. In 1761, aged 17, Charlotte found herself chosen by George III as his bride. She had good royal and Protestant credentials. Most importantly for the King, she was sweet natured and compliant.Although they did not even know each other at first,an arranged marriage turned out to be a love match.

King George III and Queen Charlotte had a stable and devoted marriage, having 15 children.Despite their strong bond, George’s later years were marked by mental illness, often attributed to porphyria.His condition led to erratic behavior, fueling rumors and affecting his reign, ultimately resulting in the establishment of a Regency under his son, the future George IV.Despite his condition he continued to be in love with his queen every day.

Created in 1931 and is one of Dali’s most famous works, this work is in the museum of New York . The melting clocks are the characteristic element of the work. The work is based on a dream of Dali. The melting clocks are often interpreted

as the flow of time, on the contrary some believe that Dali refers to the uncertainty of the future. The distortion of the elements is visible and the dreamlike quality of the work aims at the secret thoughts and desires

“The Stolen Kiss” is an oil-on-canvas painting created in 1787 by Jean-Honoré Fragonard. This is a famous painting from the Rococo period, showing a young couple in a playful and intimate moment. The man is stealing a kiss from the woman, who is laughing and trying to pull away. The scene is set in an interior room, with soft colours and smooth brushwork, typical of the Rococo style, which is light, elegant, and full of romance. The painting captures happiness and excitement of love and flirtation, making it one of Fragonard’s most well-known works. I decided to choose this painting because it reflects the joyful and playful aspects of life , that were common themes during the 18th century.

I like it because of the mystery in her gaze and the way Vermeer captures such depth with simple details. It's a perfect blend of realism and intrigue.

Starry Night Over the Rhône, was painted in 1888 by Vincent van Gogh. It presents the view he had from a rented apartment in Place Lamarrine which basically is the Arles at night ( city in France). For the painting he used blue undertowns of oil paint and to gone light to his paintings somewhere strokes of yellow paint. It shows a port, at the corner a couple, in the back the city of Arles and of course the amazing stary sky. When i gaze at the painting i feel amazed by the details and effort he put on this painting and a bit nostalgic/sad due to the dark color pallet. I believe  the Starry Night Over the Rhône is one of the most wonderful paintings I ever seen!
