There are over 4,400,000 people in the Kamba tribe. It is the fifth largest ethnic group in Kenya and makes about 11% of Kenya's overall population. The population of the tribe is growing. It is difficult to find the census of most tribes because they are spread out all over the country and possibly the whole continent. The numbers, especially huge numbers, show that the tribe is growing and that they are a strong group.

Kikamba or Kekamba is the language spoken by the Kamba tribe and currently 6 million other people speak this language also. The official languages of Kenya is Swahili and English. The reason there would be an official language is because in each country itself contains several other tribes. The other tribes have their own languages but to be able to communicate with others from other tribes that also speak their own language, they need a language everyone would speak.

Cultural Traditions

Many Kamba people are Christians but some continue to follow the old traditional belief. They believe in a monotheistic, invisible, and transcendent god called Ngai or Mulangu who lives in the sky. There god is referred to as Asa or the Father. The god is said to be the creator of life on earth and is merciful.

Another cultural tradition of the tribe is their traditional dances and music. The Kamba community love of music and dance show strongly because they show it especially at special occasions and throughout their daily lives. In these dances they show amazing skills, flexibility, aerobatics, and remarkable body movements. Their singing is lively and catchy! The purposes of these traditions for the tribe is to bring everyone closer together and so they stay as one. These traditions have very specific ways to do things that it influences the tribe to follow. They were born into it so they are already used to the traditions.

Rites of Passage

An example of a rite of passage in the Kamba tribe is Marriage. The purpose of this rite of passage is. It contributes to the culture because marriage is an important part of the Kamba culture. It also contributes to the culture because when the bride and her family get paid the dowry(money or livestock paid by the man about to marry the daughter), however much the man pays determines if the woman is marrying in to a wealthy family which is good for her family and the wife- to-be. The religious element is the god they believe in because you marry in a church through god. It affects the tribe because if the newly married couples have many kids it will add to their population and they would have to provide for all.

A current issue that doesn't only occur in the Kamba tribe is the limited water sources. This issue affects the tribe because they need the water to be able to survive, also to make their crops and feed their cattle. The tribe performs ceremonies that predict when the rainfall will come so they are prepared.

The Kamba tribe is located on the Eastern province of Kenya and stretches east from Nairobi towards the Tsavo and Northeast to Embu. The geography influences the way the tribe lives because they have to adapt to the weather and the weather in Kenya is usually hot. It's both negative and positive towards the society because the rainy season doesn't come as often so it would affect the crops they grow negatively. Also it an be positive because when the rainy season does come they are able to produce more crops.
