<title>Although it was solely a job for the lowest of the working classes, ragpicking was considered an honest occupation, more on the level of street sweeper than of a beggar. In Paris, for instance, ragpickers were regulated by law: their operations were restricted to certain times of night, and they were required to return any unusually valuable items to the owner or to the authorities.</title>

<title>Ragpicking has a positive impact on urban spaces with a weak waste management infrastructure. In India, the economic activity of ragpicking is worth about ₹3200 crore. India was also found to have a near-90% recycle rate for PET bottles, which could probably be attributed to ragpicking, given a lack of solid-waste management and under-developed waste collection and recycling culture in that country.</title>

<title>&quot;Darkness Under the Lamps&quot; was a study undertaken by Harsh Mander and V Manikandan in 2011 at the Centre for Equity Studies in Madanpur Khadar, an urban village in south Delhi where many ragpickers live. They complained that they were treated “with suspicion and derision, because of their extreme poverty, vocation of rag-picking, minority faith and suspicions that they are from Bangladesh by the middle-class community living around (sic)”. The children of ragpickers often carry on with the same occupation and are rarely educated.</title>

<title>On the social level, the ragpickers comprise the Dalit population; the lower caste, making them victims of untouchability. Due to the social dynamics, these workers are looked down upon. At an institutional level, ragpickers become vulnerable to the existing administrative structure. The ragpickers mainly are the rural-urban migrants. Lack of job opportunities and qualifications required for urban jobs forces them to take up waste picking. These people thus face a sense of identity loss and perceive themselves to be alienated in the new land. The problems faced by ragpickers are needed to be addressed at the institutional, economic and social levels.</title>
