In my internship now, my mentor teacher allows each students to check out exactly two books per week. She also assigns them a day that they are allowed to switch out their books. I think that this is an amazing opportunity for children to read books that they have never heard of as well as grow in a personal and educational way! We actually gave our students a survey that included a question about how many books that they have at home and I will say that I was very surprised to see that many of them do not have that opportunity to read much at home. When you look at a typical Elementary classroom, you will see that reading/literacy and math are the subjects that are crucial and take up majority time. While I do believe that these are such crucial subjects to be taught since they are used in every day life, I also think that STEAM is a way to make sure that our students can also learn all subjects as much as possible!
