People and Planet: food economic policy research (COPPER) project

In the Co-designing for healthy People and Planet: food Economic policy Research (COPPER) project we are interested in ways to change the price of food to make it easier to eat healthier food that is better for the planet. We are particularly interested in food subsidies (that make certain foods cheaper) and taxes (that make certain foods more expensive).

We are looking for volunteers, aged 18 or over to participate in a type of workshop called a deliberative forum. Participants must be resident in the UK, able to participate in discussion in English, and live local to Glasgow. The deliberative forum would take two days of your time (within school hours) on the 5th and 6th October 2023. You would be asked to watch video evidence about different food subsidy and tax policies, and then decide with other participants which policies you prefer and state the reasons for this. Participants will receive compensation at the rate of minimum wage for their involvement and we cover the cost of their travel to the venue.

We offer holistic, flexible, and one-to-one support and currently have a short waiting list of 6-8 weeks. We also run drop-in support on Thursdays for individuals who urgently need support which can be accessed by contacting a member of the Enough team.

We aim to provide holistic support by offering therapeutic and emotional support around experiences of GBV but also offering practical support to promote independence and empower the young women we work with. Therefore we support and signpost them through a wide variety of issues such as homelessness, housing, employment, education, court, and health to name a few!

Achieving Active Lives is a new programme from the Scottish Association for Mental Health which aims to support men aged 18+ who are inactive and experiencing mild to moderate mental health problems.
AAL provides 1-1 support in the community to build men's confidence, motivation, and resilience to enable them to take part in physical activity.

Relational Mentoring Service (The Wise Group)

The Wise Group has launched a Relational Mentoring Service. Relational Mentoring is a relationship-based approach to ongoing, compassionate support to achieve a service user’s goals.

The mentors offer face-to-face professional support exactly how and when it’s needed. The mentors will meet their households wherever is most convenient for them; that could be in a person’s home or in their local community centre or even a local cafe.

Anyone who is in or at risk of fuel poverty and struggling with their bills can use this service, as long as they want to take part.
They use a holistic approach to sustainably support households either in or at risk of fuel poverty.

When a family is referred for this service, their personal mentor will call within five days to arrange a meeting with them in their community, to get to know them, understand their needs and develop an action plan, exploring the support that The Wise Group can provide.

This could be in one or more of several areas:

Employability
Addiction
Mental health and wellbeing
Self-confidence
General life skills
Energy advice and advocacy

The mentors will offer sustainable long-term support, tailored to individual needs.

Amma Birth Companions - paid research opportunity

Amma is looking for participants to take part in a joint study between Durham University and Amma Birth Companions that explores how parents care for infants and children in asylum accommodation in Glasgow.
Participants who take part in this project will be provided with a £20 voucher.

We’d like to understand more about participants’ home surroundings and whether their environment makes it challenging to care for their baby in the way that they would like. This project has been approved by the Durham University (relevant ethics board) and is being led by a team of trained community researchers.

As part of this project, we will ask participants to take a few photos of their daily life, with a particular focus on how they care for their baby at home. Neither the participant nor their baby needs to be included in these photos — all can remain anonymous, and no participants will be named in the final report. If participants do not have a phone camera, we will lend them a camera to take these photos.

Participants will also be asked to share the photos they take with an Amma community researcher and take part in a recorded discussion about their photos. They will get the chance to tell their stories and help us learn from them about how their accommodation affects their experience of parenting.

12 week befriending service

- Live in a certain postcode

- Live alone or are socially isolated

The service is for a 12 week match where a volunteer will visit the service user for an hour once a week for 12 weeks. During this match volunteers will support service users to achieve goals including:

- getting connected digitally

- building confidence

- having space to talk and confide

- do more physical activity (including short walks)

- attending local events (including events by No.1 Befriending)

At the end of the match, service users will be able to attend our in-person and virtual events for another 9 months. We also try to refer service users to other suitable organisations.

We are currently looking for people who are willing to share their stories with us - before and after migrating to the UK. Government policy relies on dehumanising asylum seekers, and our campaign aims to counteract the “Hostile Environment” policy by platforming refugee voices and injecting humanity back into the conversation on migration. We take every measure to make sure interviewees feel safe and comfortable, such as ensuring anonymity and arranging for a translator if requested. The conversations can be tailored to the interviewee, but these are some suggested topics:

Discussions about their life before migrating and their journey to Scotland

Their experience of the UK asylum system

Challenges they have faced as a refugee/ asylum seeker in the UK

Their lives in Scotland now (e.g. hobbies, aspirations and hopes for the future)

The style of the interviews is very informal, focussed on getting to know their story and everyday lives. It provides a great opportunity for the student body to connect with the refugee community and vice versa.

SAMH provides an employability services that helps people learn new skills, build confidence and supports wellbeing, while working towards work, education, training or volunteering.

Our employability services support different groups including those who are:

struggling with their mental health (no formal diagnosis needed)
homeless or who have recently been homeless
experienced with the criminal justice system
in recovery from drugs and/or alcohol
