Because the women were so young, they did not get much of a choice as to who they married. Their fathers, uncles or brothers got to choose the husband.

The parents arranged the wedding ceremony and there was parties afterwards. The women's family had to pay a dowry to the man and once that happened, the women moved in with her husband.

If they were both citizens and she lived in his house then they were legally married. If the women moved out then they were divorced!

Most of the time there were other people living in the house such as parents and siblings and slaves.

Divorce was very common in Ancient Athens and if this occurred then the man would have to repay the dowry to the women so that she would have some money to live on and the children stayed with the father to learn how to run the farm or business they would inherit.

Only boys were allowed to attend schools and although they were private, even the poorest of people could afford to send their boys to school for a couple of years.

Until the age of 6 or 7, their mother or a male slave taught the boys.

School went from when the boys were 6 or 7 to when they were 13 or 14.
