The Dollmaker clapped giddily and gently examined his newest acquirement. A fine doll, he decided as his wrinkled thumb caressed its jaw. A girl perhaps eleven or twelve, but with clear porcelain skin, no infuriating little red marks that he'd have to sand off. He really did appreciate when his volunteers helped this process go as smoothly as possible. Endollment was not an easy business you see, and-he shook his bald head sadly- little girls just didn't appreciate the art anymore.
He remembered his own daughter, the way her beautiful blue eyes had shone when he'd presented her with her first doll, his very best work, even now.
"For me, Papa?" she'd whispered as she traced her chubby toddler fingers over the dolls expertly carved face. He'd laughed softly and ruffled her auburn hair that had always somehow escaped her hair ribbons and hovered around her face. "For you, Mena. It's to be a present, so that you will always have a friend, no matter where you go."
She'd started up at him in wonder, her little pink lips pursed as she considered his statement. She'd wrinkled her brow, which had always make her look older than her four years, "I suppose then," she paused, and the smile he lived for every day spread across her face, "I suppose I must decide to love you more then."
Those had been her last words to him. She'd disappeared the next day, her tea set still spread across her little table, the doll he'd made in her likeness still laying on her pillow. Its rosy dress had looked so stark against Philomena's lacy bedding. It looked so much like his daughter, but his daughter never scowled like the doll did now.
He'd never been able to save her. He never would. The grief had drove him mad many said, that is, until he had perfected Endollment. Now he wasn't the only one to have to deal with the the heavy guilt of loss, now he wasn't mad, but simply a Dollmaker.
