In Sparta, the government was an oligarchy. The people didn't have many rights. The government was very strict and brutal. The military stressed discipline and obedience.

In Athens, they had a direct democracy. This gave more rights to the people, but it still excluded a large amount of people. Men had more political rights than women.

In Sparta, women got more education than men. They got to read, write, play sports and more. Boys learned how to write as well, but they spent more of their time training for battle.

In Athens, the women were not allowed to go to school. The men got all the education. The only thing women were able to learn was cooking, sewing, and how to be a god wife and mother. Boys went to school. They learned how to play an instrument, public speaking, drama, reading, writing, and sports.

Spartan men were expected to go into the military. At age seven, boys would go into thirteen years of military training. Once they turned twenty, they would be in the official army. They could marry then, but until they turned thirty, they were not allowed to live at home. Finally, if they turned sixty years old, they would retire from the military. Spartan women had more freedom than other Greek city-states. They could own land and travel. They could play sports and go to school. Their main goal was to raise strong, healthy babies.

In Athens, it was primarily male-dominated. Only men were allowed to go to school. When they finished school, they were expected to take an active role in public affairs. Women couldn't go to school, and were only allowed to leave the house when their husbands would come out with them.

In Sparta, slavery was acceptable. Their slaves were called heliots and they were prisoners of war and forced to do hard labor.

In Athens, slavery was also acceptable. Over one quarter of the population was made up of slaves. They were captured by clashes from overseas. The slaves were treated the same in Athens, as they were in Sparta.
