School was difficult because I was always afraid of bad things happening. I went to college, but anxiety overwhelmed me. I knew I could learn, but I wasn't sure how I could have a career when I was afraid of everything. My brothers had a small tech company and they gave me a job. All I had to do was work from home and learn as much about technology in 1996 as I could. This was the beginning of what is now a 28 year career in tech.

I don't have a college degree, but I know a lot about computers and programming.

Mr Cerf is hearing-impaired, and his disability influenced his work developing the internet. Back in the 1980s, deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals searched for a good alternative to communicating over the telephone. Mr Cerf spearheaded the creation of the first commercial email service, allowing him to communicate with family members and colleagues without straining to hear.
