Holden finds himself thinking about girls' legs while waiting for Sally. He feels depressed, and in a way jealous because he claims these girls will go on to date these cool guys who like cars and jazz music, instead of being with a guy like himself. This further shows Holden’s sense of loneliness in this part of the book.

While watching the play, Holden notes how he really is not a fan of the actors within the play. He talks about how the actors and actresses think of themselves as better than everybody else, and for that reason, he despises them. Holden claims, "They didn't act like people and they didn't act like actors," (Salinger 126). Holden's reasoning is that they were too good and cocky to the point where it didn't feel like acting or a show. And to top it off they continue to act in the overconfident way that why do.

Ice Skating with Sally

Holden is ice skating with Sally and says she only wants to do it because she wants to show off her cute little ass. Holden eventually gets over it because he likes it and this shows one of things that he is obsessed about. He is obsessed with sex showing his loss of innocence but brings it up because he dislikes people that are not pure. HE doesn't have sex to hold onto this last little bit innocence, a reason why he pushes off the prostitute in Chapter 15. He also begins to fight with Sally getting loud and quiet with pretty aggressive mood swings that result in Sally crying and he ends up leaving on his own. Holden is very lonely, it is his own fault but he has brought this up on himself in the way that he has acted. This only exacerbates his feelings.

Calling Jane

After the skating incident, Holden decides to go to the phone booth to decide who he's going to call. He starts to think about Jane as he recalls a time he was with a bad guy. Holden continues to go on a tangent about how women always make excuses for a bad man, as he says that they always make the excuse that the man has an "inferiority complex". This shows Holden's continued jealous feelings about other men and how he might be the one with the inferiority complex. In the end of it all, he decides to give Jane a call which goes unanswered. He settles for an old friend named Carl Luce and they decide to meet up.

Movie at radio city

Holden goes to see a movie at Radio City Music Hall and sees the Rockettes. He finds the whole show to be horrible and said "Old Jesus would have puked if He could see it," (Chapter 18). Holden thinks the whole show is superficial which is how he relates to the rest of the world as he does not fit in with everyone but he likes the man playing the kettle drums. His brother Allie would have liked it and this goes back to how Holden supports things that appear pure or innocent like the nuns, the kid singing on the sidewalk and Jane.

Walking from Movies to Wicker Bar

On his walk from the movies to Wicker Bar, Holden thinks about going to war. He mentions how he believes he could never be in the army like his brother D.B. He claims that he'd rather just get shot by a firing squad then have to go through with all the things soldiers must do. While this is a normal thought amongst most people (the unwillingness to go to war), it seems that this part of the novel is used to show Holden's cowardliness. He is always criticizing others in horrible ways, calling people names while he admits that he himself doesn't even like to think about war. But this is rare of Holden - to admit something of himself that is a seemingly bad trait.

Holden observes all of the "phonies" at the Wicker Bar and goes into depth about the music being played at the bar. Holden notes all the horrible things about the bar but in a good amount of detail, meaning he has been there many times in his life. This is another example of Holden seemingly hiding himself from the audience. Holden has clearly visited the bar plenty of times meaning he has to enjoy going there, but he still insist on proclaiming about how terrible the music is and how annoying the phonies are.

Holden meets Luce in a bar and Holden's obsession with sex continues. Holden asks him about his sexual experiences, who he's seeing and what sex has to do with everything. Holden continues to probe this issue and his constant obsession sex is evident. This shows his immaturity and the first time he shows any real admiration toward anyone that in his eyes is not innocent.
