After the Armenian Revolutionary Federation killed thousands of Azeris, the republic had crumbled to a level in which a new republic took form(Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, leading the Republic of Azerbaijan to originally claim independence in 1918, but in 1920, Republic of Azerbaijan was added into the USSR as Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. It was the USSR's main energy and oil contributor during WWII.
