Published in the year 1962, and written in by Anthony Burgess. The summary on Amazon says "In Anthony Burgess's nightmare vision of the future, where criminals take over after dark, the story is told by the central character, Alex, who talks in a brutal invented slang that brilliantly renders his and his friends' social pathology. A Clockwork Orange is a frightening fable about good and evil, and the meaning of human freedom. When the state undertakes to reform Alex—to "redeem" him—the novel asks, "At what cost?"

They don’t go into the cause of goodness, so why of the other shop? . . . Badness is of the self, the one, the you or me on our oddy knockies, and that self is made by old Bog or God and is his great pride and radosty. But the not-self cannot have the bad, meaning they of the government and the judges and the schools cannot allow the bad because they cannot allow the self. And is not our modern history, my brothers, the story of brave malenky selves fighting these big machines? (Burgess 31-32).

This is very important because Alex talks about how everyone has evil in them so the government shouldn't try and stop them. This thinking allows Alex to do unspeakable things without thinking twice.

"What's it going to be then, eh?" (Burgess 132).
Alex says this quote many times, but this is the first time after being "corrected". He regains his ability to think and do wrong things after being in prison. This is big for him because in prison he couldn't even think about doing bad things. He gets back to his droogs and his life is back to normal.
