In Chapter one of the book, readers are introduced to Frank as the narrator . Frank describes his childhood as miserable, and says that everything would have been better for the family if his parents didn't move to Ireland. In this first chapter of the story, we learn that Frank's parents were pressured into a marriage because Frank's mother, Angela became pregnant out of wedlock. After Frank's birth, Angela and Malachy have four more children in the span of four years (Malachy Jr., Eugene, Oliver, and Margaret). At the end of this chapter, Frank describes the death of his only sister, and its affect on his parents. Malachy Sr. goes on a drinking binge and Angela launches into a depressive downward spiral. The intervention of aunts Philomena and Delia bring with it money from Grandma in Limerick to send the family back to Ireland.

Ashes are dark, bleak, and lifeless, which is the tone of the story Frank is telling. Grandma Sheenan feels bad for Bill Galvin because she knows his wife passed away, so in the morning she cooks him breakfast and dinner and delivers it to him at Limekiln where he works. Angela makes a suggestion that Malachy should take Bill the food so Grandma doesn't have to walk all the way to his work everyday, but the food was so irresistible and he eats all of his food. When Grandma and Bill find out they tell Malachy that for two weeks he will be delivering his food for free.
