In contaminated and crowded areas, people are more susceptible to cholera. This is because poor sanitation is the leading cause of the infection. In most epidemic cases, drinking or eating food contaminated with the feces (infected with the vibrio cholerae bacterium), is likely to transfer the infection.

Cholera can range from mild to severe symptoms. One in ten people infected experience watery diarrhea, vomiting, and leg cramps, dehydration, dry mouth, loss of skin elasticity, and low blood pressure. Normally, death is caused because of the loss of bodily fluid. If infected and these symptoms persist, seek medical help immediately.

The most efficient and common treatment is replacing the loss of bodily fluids heavily. Rehydration is done by an Oral Rehydration Solution (water, salts, sugars, ect lost through diarrhea). In severe cases, cholera can be treated with IV fluids. With these simple treatments, less than 1% will die according to the CDC. A form of prevention is also present, a VaxChora vaccine, but it is not 100% reliable.

The Precautions:

The top cause of cholera is drinking unsanitary and infected water. The following are the top three ways to sanitize water:
1. The simplest way to clean your water is to boil it. Boiling burns out toxins or in this case, bacteria.
2. Adding bleach to your water is beneficial and also destroys bacteria. For every five gallons of water, one cup of bleach should be added. For all chemical treatments, wait 30 minutes before ingestion.
3. The third water purifying method is iodine treatment -- which is more efficient than chlorine treatment. Five drops of the chemical should be added to a quart of water. Be aware of allergies!
