We used the formula to work out the age of our tree. We first had to work out the the girth which was 40cm and then divide that by 2.5 as the girth grows 2.5cm per year on average. This meant that the age of the tree is 16 years old.

We also made our own measurement called a Brodie (the height of Brodie) and we estimated that our tree was 7 Brodies tall.

Health and safety as well as adding in a fun theatrical element. (Photos to follow in seperate images.)

We also wanted to add an element of inquiry - why do we not want to use living things? Kids will understand that as humans we have a duty to protect our planet. We don’t want to damage the living things - adding in a theatrical element again the instructions will read that the witches only want things that are dead

Spiky twigs, shaped leaves, moss, dead leaves, funky colours etc would be added to the potion in order for children to explore a range of textures and they can justify and explain why they have chosen a certain ingredient for the potion.

For this investigation, we found different results depending on the height and flexibility of the person.

For example, Zoe (pictured) was shorter than Liam. She wasn’t very flexible and able to see the tree from a short distance away (Length of distance 159cm + length of leg 93cm = tree 252 cm long). Which made the tree seem significantly shorter than what it was.

When tested with Liam, we did the same formula (Lengthof distance 550cm + length of leg 100cm = tree 650cm long) and that have a more realistic approximate for the tree.
What we learned was that different flexibilities can see different things no matter what the height is so accuracy isn’t always right.

out of twigs and leaves.
We were given the curricular areas of Social Studies and Science
and have also incorporated RME and HWB.
I am developing an increasing awareness and understanding of
my own beliefs and I put them into action in positive ways. RME 1-08a
- We would relate our hedgehog shelter to a philosophical question regarding different theories e.g. utilitarianism, virtue etc. An active approach came be used to contextualise the learning here.

Through taking part in a variety of events and activities, I
am learning to recognise my own skills and abilities as well as those of
others. HWB 1-19a

- As the activity takes place in groups, this will develop the learner’s ability to delegate and form relationships with their peers out of a classroom context. Great to test their social skills in a different context for learning.
