One concern I have about taking this mini course on literacy in science is finding the right balance between teaching scientific concepts and supporting students’ reading and writing development. Concern- students have a hard time engaging with scientific text and with literacy skills in general. They have a hard time transferring the skills they learn in ELA to science to unpack and understand text/ questions. My fear- the new state exam requires students to apply literacy skills to understand these wordy questions. We need to teach them these skills to be successful.

One of my main hopes for taking this course on literacy in science is to learn practical strategies that help students better understand and communicate scientific ideas through reading, writing, and discussion. I want to strengthen my ability to integrate literacy skills into science lessons so students can build both content knowledge and critical thinking skills. One strategy I use- to level all the reading to the grade level of the students- because most are on K-2 reading level- so texts need to be significantly lowered for 8th graders.
