COVID-19 affects the respiratory system as a whole, but the main effect is on the lungs. It causes acute respiratory distress syndrome, which results in dangerously low levels of oxygen in the blood, also known as hypoxemia. The virus enters the body through a molecule called ACE-2. The virus infects cells along the airway by attaching to the ACE-2 and other molecules on the surface of those cells. The virus uses the ACE-2 molecule as a pathway to get inside of the cells and then make copies of itself. The immune system will then react to the virus, causing inflammation and damage to the alveoli, causing them to scar, stiffen and fill up with fluid. As fluid buildup happens in the alveoli and lung tissue, this impairs the alveoli and the lung tissue, making it difficult for gas exchange to occur. Oxygen will have a hard time diffusing into the capillaries. The low levels of blood oxygen will then have many other significant effects on other organs in the body. COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus strain and is spread through respiratory droplets released into the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks or breathes near you.
Some symptoms/consequences are:
- fever/chills
- cough
- shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- fatigue
- muscle or body aches
- headaches
- new loss of taste or smell
- sore throat
- congestion or runny nose
- nausea or vomiting
- diarrhea
People who have suffered from severe infections can develop multiorgan effects and autoimmune conditions.
Prevention:
The best way to prevent the spread and transmission of COVID-19 is to get vaccinated to protect yourself against COVID. Other measures you can take are wearing a mask, staying at least one metre away from people, and washing your hands frequently.
Treatment:
People with mild symptoms are just encouraged to stay at home until symptoms are gone, just like with a normal cold. People with severe cases of COVID-19 are usually treated in the hospital through supportive care. This treatment helps to support the body's vital organs. They will monitor oxygen levels and provide treatment to maintain a healthy supply of oxygen to the rest of the body. Some patients may need a nasal cannula or an oxygen mask.

Links
https://www.healthgrades.com/right-care/coronavirus/how-hospitals-treat-covid-19-patients
https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/treatments-for-covid-19
https://www.who.int/health-topics/coronavirus#tab=tab_1
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/long-term-effects/index.html
