The word 'sonnet' is derived from the Italian word 'sonnetto', which means small or little song/lyric. A sonnet poem has fourteen lines and is written in Iambic Pentameter, with a specific rhyming scheme. Each line has 10 syllables. There are 6 types of sonnet poetry; Italian Sonnet, Shakespearean Sonnet, Spenserian Sonnet, Miltonic Sonnet, Terza Rima Sonnet and Curtal Sonnet. Sonnet poetry is popular among many poets due to its adaptability for different purposes. Its structure is perfect for expressing emotions, and its short length is easy to manage for both the writer and reader.
