Observation

Sarah, today I noticed your expressed interest in dropping the shells into the tin and taking them out again. When you misplaced the shell, you were determined to find it again. You searched inside the tin and all around you until you found it next to your foot, then you said “oh!” and picked it up. I noticed you were able to manipulate the lid of the tin, opening and closing it repeatedly.

Sarah used her cognitive skills in spatial exploration as she looked for the dropped shell and explored objects by dropping the shell into the tin and taking it out again.

She also used her gross motor skills as she reached for the shell when it fell around her.

Additionally, she displayed her fine motor skills as she manipulated the lid open and closed using her pincer grasp

We will continue to support these skills as they develop by providing a variety of objects for Sarah to explore daily. We will incorporate activities to strengthen both her fine and gross motor skills and provide items that allow for spatial exploration and other means of building cognitive skills.

Tools for further documentation

Tool #1 used for documentation is an iPad or tablet that can take photos and record videos. This allows an educator to look back on the play and maybe catch something you missed in the moment.

Tool #2 used for documentation is a printer. This allows you to print photos of the play and activities and makes it easy to share with families.

Tool #3 that I think is important is parent engagement platforms, used to share photos/videos, and information about the child's day with caregivers. This is a quick easy way to share your observations with parents.

This activity gives opportunity for development with fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, problem solving, and cause and effect understanding.

Voice of colleagues

Including the voice of colleagues in documentation can provide a better understanding of a child's development and makes activities more effective as they may view something from a new perspective and bring new ideas for provocations.
