In this part of the book the main conflict is being introduced and the father is expressing his ambition to move south. Something I am curious about is what the historical context is behind the book; overall the text has a post apocalyptic theme mixed with elements of historical events. Additionally, I want to discover how the characters have ended up in this vulnerable position.

In this part of the book the father and son are continuing their travel down south. They are faced with challenges as they struggle to have the adequate amount of food. In fact the father offered his son a soda and encouraged him to savor it because it may be his last for a long time. They are also facing extremely cold weather conditions causing them to be reliant on fires for warmth. The book is similar to the walking dead, a popular tv and book series, because it features a post apocalyptic theme. In the walking dead a father is left to take care of his son by himself and constantly struggling to survive. The charters in the road face this same issue.

In this part of the book the father and son are making progress towards moving down south but are struggling to find adequate food. A song that matches the tone of the book so far is birds of a feather by Billie Eilish. The song is a love that opens by saying “I want you to stay til I’m in the grave , til I rot away dead and buried, til I’m in the casket you carry, if yiu go I’m going too.” This describes the love the father feels towards his son since he has stated once his son dies, he will die to. The father has such a strong affinity for his son that his son has become his only motivation for living.

In this part of the book the father and son discovered many people have resorted to cannibalism as a source of food. This meme connects to the book because it reveals how society has begun to act in inhumane ways The world is filled with desperation and despair as a result of the lack of food, water, and shelter. Thus, leading humanity in selfish ways; however good still exists within society but is very rare to find.

The story ended with the father dying after being wounded by a bow and arrow shot. This wound lead him to become feckless and unable to support himself let alone his child. A surprising twist that could’ve happened in the story would’ve been the son committing suicide. The father and son could both be described as candors because of their openness about their emotions. Specifically, their suicidal thoughts. If the son would have acted on his urges the story would’ve changed entirely. It is highly likely that the father would’ve committed soon after and they would’ve never made it down south.
