Brother by NEEDTOBREATHE

I chose this song because in the book it highlights how their brother relationship factors into everything about Sam and Dean. Sam and Dean would do anything for each other because they’re all they have, they didn’t grow up with a lot of friends or family.

Recommendation:

I would recommend this book to anyone who’s watched Supernatural is interested in knowing why Sam and Dean are who they. The two brothers both had the same childhood but when it comes to personality they can be complete opposites from each other and you wonder why. When the psychology is broken down things become much more clear and then when you see the show, it’s more interesting. When you watch the show you tend to then analyze the behaviors of the characters and notice that what the book says it’s very true. If you haven’t seen the show you might not really understand it though so I would recommend it more for people familiar with the show.

Interesting Quotes:

Pg. 36, “Family structure appears to be less important than the degree of family connection and support. Regardless of whether an individual is raised in a single- or two parent home, and regardless the individual’s parents are biological, step-parents, or adoptive parents, parental support seems to be the most important influence on a child’s well-being.”

This quote stuck out to me because a lot families modern day involve stepparents and single parents. I come from a single parent household and I feel like single parents feel pressure to find a partner so their child can have two parental figures. This quote proves that it doesn’t really matter if the parent has a partner or not when raising their child and what matters is supporting the child.

Pg. 245, “Although the hero never walks entirely alone on the Hero’s Journey, Supernatural shows us that heroes can achieve even greater heights by working (in this case hunting) together.”

This quote stuck out to because I remember learning about Hero’s Journey and in this book, they made up something called hunter’s journey. Also I think it’s definitely true that it’s better to work together rather than alone because you do better with someone in most instances.

Pg. 134, “While many theories and individual studies within developmental psychology will focus on a particular age (such as adolescence) or a particular outcome (such as morality), one theory attempted to create a template for how our identities and choices continue to develop from birth to death: developmental psychologist Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial stages of development. During each of the eight stages of Erikson said people experience over the course of the average lifespan, we make a critical choice that will lead to healthy or unhealthy expression of self and identity.”

This quote stuck with me because I found it interesting and it honestly makes sense. Throughout our lives we go through a lot identity developments and I’m currently through one of those stages. I relate to the theory and I’ve seen how different attitudes affect your mental state.

This book cover represents Sam and Dean because they travel a lot in Dean’s Impala from place to place when fighting the supernatural creatures. The Impala symbolizes a home that they don’t have because they live in motels but they always have the Impala.

Throughout this book there was a lot to like, I liked how they started with the background of how Sam and Dean were affected by their childhood. It's good that they start the book off by laying down the psychology of Sam and Dean’s childhood because it’s essential to understanding the rest of the book. Without the psychological effects of their childhood being laid out first, the book would be harder to understand because the other parts of their psychology build off that. Another thing that I like about this book is that it compares the supernatural scenarios to real life relatable things. By comparing supernatural situations to real life situations it allows the reader to relate to the situations talked about in the book more. I feel like reading something you can relate to draws the reader in more. When the reader reads something they can relate to in a book they’re more intrigued. Overall, I like this book and I can’t think of anything that there’s not to like about this book because it has all the components of a good book.
The main message of this book is to keep going and for the readers to be like the characters and keep on fighting. The part that I would say is most interesting is the way relate situations that nobody can relate to that are fictionalized to real-life situations. With the message of telling the readers to keep fighting, the book is more impactful on its readers and the show becomes more meaningful to viewers. I was able to relate to certain parts of the book because we all go through struggles in our lives. The book doesn't really remind me of anything because this is the first time I read a book where they connect a tv show to real life. To me, this book is unique and I've never read anything like it but itś relatable and I wish there were more books like this. I feel like the approach of this book is very unique because I've never read something like it.

Summary:

In Supernatural Psychology: Roads Less Traveled, the psychology of Sam and Dean Winchester along with other characters in the show, Supernatural is analyzed. In the show, the main characters, Sam and Dean hunt supernatural creatures because their dad became a hunter after a monster kills Sam and Dean’s mom. Their dad becoming a hunter meant they had to rely on themselves from a young age and that they had an abnormal childhood. Now adults, they’re hunters who lead unhealthy lives and have bad habits so this book talks about why they are along with other characters. The other characters who are analyzed include an angel named Castiel, a girl named Charlie, and a demon named Crowley.
Due to Sam and Dean being left alone at a young age with nobody except for family friend, Bobby to care for them, Dean had to be like an adult from a young age. Dean was treated like an adult by their father from a young age and was encouraged to grow up quick. The book says that is why Dean has a hard time connecting with others and tends to keep everything inside rather than talk to other and get help. Sam, on the other hand, had Dean to take care of him, who made sacrifices to make sure Sam would have a childhood because he didn’t get to. According to the studies cited in the book, this leads to Sam growing up and being more social and trying to live a healthy life before he went into hunting. The book also gives an explanation to why they have bad habits such as defensive mechanisms, act the way they act, and why they’re as motivated as they are. The effects of these situations and situations that are similar that happen in real life are also discussed in the book. The relation to real life makes the book more effective and really pushes the book’s central message.
