When pale strangers enter Amari's village who is 15, her entire tribe welcomes them. In her part of Africa, visitors are always a reason for celebration, but these strangers do not want celebrate. They are here to capture the strongest villagers and kill the rest. They are slave traders. In the time it takes a gun to fire, Amari's life is ruined. Along with her family and village. Beaten, branded, and dragged onto a slave ship, Amari is forced to witness horrors worse than any nightmare.
Now survival and escape are all Amari dreams about. She struggles to hold on to her memories while enduring backbreaking plantation work. She finds friendship in unexpected places. Polly, a white girl, proves not to be as hateful as she seemed when Amari arrived. The plantation owner's wife is kind to Amari. These small things didn't relieve Amari's feelings of hopelessness. When an opportunity to escape arrives, Amari and Polly decide to work together to find the thing they both want most, which is freedom.

One thing I liked about the book was the fact they did not sugarcoat anything in the book, it was a very raw book. I didn't dislike anything in the book. I think the book was very well put together. The part of the plot that was interesting was when the headmaster's wife was giving birth and when the baby came out not fully white, Amari and Polly tried to hide the baby but when the headmaster found out, he threw the baby to the ground and shot it. It was interesting to me because how can one murder a baby in which he murdered the child.
When reading the book it reminded me of old movies and stories I would see in class while learning about slavery. This book is relatable because Amari had to adjust and learn how to survive in an unfamiliar place.

“Amari loved the rusty brown dirt of Ziavi. The path, hard-packed from thousands of bare feet that had trod on it for decades, was flanked on both sides by fat, fruit-laden mango trees, the sweet smell of which always seemed to welcome her home.” ( p.2)

This description of Amari’s village demonstrates Amari’s love and appreciation for her home and community, even though the “whites” may think this is a community of savages living in the jungle. I find this important because it shows that you should always love where you come from

"We are caught in a place where there is no hope, no escape from the misery of the present of the memories of the past" (p. 29)

I liked this quote because I feel as though what was said is relatable to life now. In the past we experienced hate and racism. Up to now we are still experiencing such behavior, "we are caught in a place where there is no hope."
