Discussion 2: Write your own four-sentence definition of educational technology

From the video that Professor Shamburg shared I was able to learn about education technology and use that understanding to create my own definition of it. We know that there are various forms of education, being formal, informal, non-formal education. We also know that there are various forms of the word technology, as well as different ways in which they are perceived. I would define educational technology as the way we can use technology to support education. Educational technology is the implementation of the use devices, such as laptops and smart boards, to enhance the learning experience. Educational technology is the strategy of improving the learning and teaching experience through the involvement of modern day technology. Education technology is the blending of human and nonhuman knowledge and skill to create a higher level and more advanced classroom experience for all of those involved.

Education technology allowed us to be able to continue to teach throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Without the technology we have today we would have not been able to continue reaching students at home and so many new websites and apps were created or used for the first time from the need of the COVID-19 pandemic. The use of education technology allows us to take this course and have the same benefit as those who attend school in person. While many had to learn how to use these resources for the first time, once they understood how to use them they kept them even when returning to in person learning.

Discussion 3: Ask Me Anything about Copyright and Fair Use.

Professor Shamburg, I thoroughly enjoyed going through and reading the resources you provided to be able to understand your experiences working with podcasting and digital media in education and found it very interesting! I appreciate that you took the time to clarify some of the confusion students and teachers have about copy-right, fair use, and digital media. I also appreciated the example of Jane and her podcast theme song, I agree that she could pay the fee for using the song but an easier and more affordable way to avoid that is to create her own catchy theme song.

A question I have for you is do you have an example of a case where copyright or fair use was argued and won but you did not agree with who was deemed correct? For example, I have seen videos online where people would use another creators content and I have agreed that it was fair use when they tried to argue against it claiming copyright infringement but other times where I found it unjustifiable. I would see this a lot on youtube where creators would include other creators videos in their own and then get claimed for copyright, which at the time, was warranted for a strike and if someone would receive 3 strikes on their video they would potentially lose their channel and all income from it.

A famous case at the time was Matt Hosseinzadeh v. Ethan Klein and Hila Klein arguing over whether defendants’ (Klien) “reaction video,” showing a large portion of plaintiff’s (Hosseinzadeh) copyrighted video, constitutes fair use. The judge ultimately sided with the Kliens which at the time was a big win for Youtubers and fair use, which I agreed with, but some did not.

Discussion 7: SAMR: Please describe a clear example of Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, or Redefinition.

My example of the SAMR model is a program that incorporates all of the areas, known as Peardeck. In the article I used for reference, they compare themselves to Powerpoint which is their most similar competitor. In reference to substitution, a teacher can give a presentation to students through Pear Deck instead of with PowerPoint and can upload an existing presentation from PowerPoint. Since the slideshow is cloud-based and accessible from anywhere, all anyone needs is access to your Google Drive to access your presentations. In regards to augmentation, Pear Deck students can join a slide presentation from their own device, student screens stay in sync with yours, and this helps students in the back of the room might have trouble seeing the screen easily access it right in front of them. Students also have the option to go through the slides at their own pace if teachers allow that feature. For modification, there are interactive question templates in which every student can answer each question through their own device. Student responses appear in real time making the data accessible and actionable in the moment, allowing you to see how the class is progressing and adapt as necessary. Redefinition is when students can see answers from each of their classmates allowing them to see other cognitive processes and improve their own. Because answers are shared anonymously, every student is included. Student responses are converted into a notes document after class that is shared between teacher and student allowing for direct feedback and conversation about in-class content and discussions.

https://medium.com/pear-deck/samr-and-pear-deck-d9a78534467a

I foster a culture where students take ownership of their learning goals and outcomes in both independent and group settings by having the students work as a whole, then groups, than partners and then independently. By lowering the support that they get with each task they become more prepared to complete more of the work themselves and that allowed them to work with someone or multiple people in multiple opportunities before they finally complete the ;earning goal on their own and hold themselves accountable rather than have a peer hold them accountable. This way they can take ownership of their own learning environment and experience, as well as the learning outcome and whether or not they met their goal.

I have had assignments in which students must work together and within their community complete a task.
