Japan is a very over populated country, especially in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. "A country’s population density is the average number of persons in a unit of area, such as a square mile." Japan is 10 times more densely populated compared to the United States.

Population Densitiy's affect on Transportation

Crowding in Japan has a major affect on transportation. In Japan they have found many suitable ways to create an efficient public transportation system. One of the ways that the Japanese have made it easier to deal with there population density is Underground subways that connect to other cities. These Subways are practically always running, and they are almost never late. Another part of the underground subways is the people who have to push people into the subway before the door closes. Another way that the Japanese have helped the crowding situation is there high speed bullet trains, one of the fastest trains in the world. Population Density in Tokyo has also affected parking, as a result there are very strict rules on car ownership. In Tokyo there are car parking sports that look like shoe boxes, these garages are high up in the air.

Housing and Population Density Collide

Countries and cities with high population densities face many problems housing, especially Japan. Most of the houses in Japan tend me very small, this is caused by an insufficient amount of flat land. Problems with housing began in 1950's when more and more people started moving into, this caused most Japanese people to live in Nuclear families. A nuclear family is houses with just the parents and their children, no extended family. In Japan they have found many ways to adjust to small homes by having futons that fold and unfold into closets and spread onto the floor in the living room. In addition they use small house appliances, such as small ovens and refrigerators. Another way of using the limited amount of space that's available in Japan is planting small trees.

Conflict and Solution over Land Use

Having emulation over land use is common and expected in Japan simply because there is not enough space to make everyone happy. One of the ways the Japanese have responded to this is discovering new ways to use the small amount of open land have now. Such as building up and down, building taller buildings, but there are some restraints to this solution because Japan is an earthquake active zone. But of course the Japanese found a way to get around this problem by using "earth quake resistant building techniques. Another key point of how land use is controlled in Japan is the fact that many cities in Japan have underground shopping malls, and sometimes even parks. On another note the Japanese have created new land by filling in shallow wetlands with dirt and rubble. This fix also comes with a negative side because it kills wildlife, valuable fish, and their habitats.

Health in Japan because of Population Density

Pollution can be a very big problem in a high populated country like Japan. Suprisingly, Japan is actually very clean, city streets and swept and cleaned on a daily basis. Although, acid rain does take a toll on Japan, "...rainfall that has large amounts of acid." The acid in rain usually harms and pollutes water and soil, as a result this damages plants, and sometimes animals. Pollution from factories and farms can also cause problems that can lead to poisoning fish and anyone who eats them because of chemicals that get's dumped in the oceans and or streams. High population density also has an effect in other ways, for example there are more car crashes because of traffic issues. Also, diseas spreads more quickly. On top of all of this, Japan's life expectancy remains to be one of the highest in the world. This shows how Japanese people have found ways to overcome risks and health hazards of over crowding.
