The beginning of the story follows a lawyer named Mr. Utterson. He is a strict and somewhat uptight person, but overall very kind and helps people in need -- even if they have lost their reputation in Victorian Society.

While taking a Sunday walk through London with his cousin and friend Richard Enfield, Utterson comes across an unusual looking door in an a alley.

Enfield tells Utterson a story about the door and a strange man named Mr. Hyde associated with it. Enfield recalls how he once witnessed Hyde trample a young girl in the street rather violently and coldly. Enfield and others made Hyde pay for his crimes. When Hyde paid, he did so with a check signed by someone rather well-known in the city -- Dr. Henry Jekyll.
