Stages of culture shock <br>- euphoric stage: positive expectations and idealizations about the unfamiliar culture.<br>-crises stage: minor issues become major problems and cultural differences become irritating.<br>- adjustment stage: involves learning to adjust effectively to the new culture environment <br>-adaptation stage: involves the development of new ways of behaving and coping which allow the person to operate successfully.<br>reference: Ferraro 1990; Kohls 1984; Preston 1984<br><br>4. Causes of culture shock <br>-cognitive fatigue: unfamiliar culture; unfamiliar language, behaviors, and situations.<br>reference: Guthrie 1975, p.25<br>-role shock: changes in the ways in which a person's familiar roles; role responsibilities in the host culture may differ significantly from the home culture.<br>reference: Brislin 1981.<br><br>5. Managing culture shock <br>-A succesful culture shock management depends on support and personal abilities to adapt.<br><br> 5.1. Pre-departure training <br> -Greatly minimise culture shock<br> -prepares unexpected reaction and experience<br> Reference : Ferraro 1990, p. 55<br> -provides information about the host culture<br> -assists managers identifying attitudes and behaviour<br> Reference : Brislin 1981, p. 199<br> -Facilitates tolerance and openness <br> -These 4 factors help to reduce culture shock<br><br>5.2 Settlement support <br>includes assistance with housing, schooling, and spouse support.<br><br>5.3 Language training <br>- managers who speak the language of the host community report more rapid familiarization with the host culture and higher rates of adaptaion.<br>reference: Jones 19998, p.13<br>-the ability to speak local language is also perceived positively by by host country nationals and assist acceptance.<br><br>5.4 Development of open and flexible attitude <br>-successful adaption also depends on openness on doing new things and ideas<br> -successful adaption also leads to bi-cultural<br> Reference : Kohls 1984, p. 222<br> -but, it requires intellectually, behaviourally and emotionally<br><br>6. Conclusion <br>-refers to the stress which results from the loss of familiar ways of thinking and acting when. a person moves to live and work in an unfamiliar culture.the effects can be minimised by careful pre-departure training, and most importantly the openness to, and interest, in difference and a toleration of uncertainty.</div>]]></description>
