This is a rubric for essay paper writing assignments—students are to write four essay papers for this course. In the instructions for the assignments, I have already explained what students are supposed to write about. This rubric is to tell them how to write. It will serve as a guide for students to follow—they will know what are expected of their papers. In addition, my grading will be based on the rubric, which will surely make it much easier for me to decide how many points is a paper worth.

A rubric is a great way to clearly communicate your expectations to students. I always found them helpful when I was a student. In a journalism course, I would probably take more of a holistic approach, but an analytic approach could work for something like my query letter assignment, which has some clearly defined parts. Because there is a clear structure, a rubric further explains to the student what is necessary to create them. I think this would work well in my course.

Sharing a rubric with high-stakes assignments lets students know what aspects of the final product are more valuable, and hopefully, they will focus their attention to them. What I dislike about rubrics is giving a numerical value to the descriptors. What is the difference between a 75% and a 77%?. I worry about my intra-rater reliability. It's easy to distinguish between "Exceeds" vs. "Meets" expectations, but not that much within one category (a high vs. mid "Meets expectations"). Yet, numbers are necessary to calculate course averages.

The purpose is to have students begin to get to know each other while they are also learning how to pay close attention to and interpret our readings. I used to be very against rubrics, but I am finding them more useful in the past year or so, especially when I want students to pay attention to detail.

I do like rubrics. I usually don't incorporate them in D2L, but I can see the value in doing it this way. For students, it allows them to see where they excelled or fell short and I've found it eliminates a lot of the back and forth after grades are returned. They can't argue with a grade if you've documented where they've lost points and why. I love going over the rubric when covering the assignment and encourage the students to view the rubric as a checklist.

It gives them an easy way to view how I will assess their work before they turn in their assignments, and allows them the opportunity to make sure they meet all of the "excellent" requirements before submission. it also helps eliminate a lot of the "debate" or "argument" of a student thinking that they should have gotten a better grade, because I can easily point to the rubric and where they did not meet expectations.

I just don't feel there are many rubrics in life outside the classroom. In a way, grant proposals have rubrics. And I suppose we could argue the promotion process has something akin to a rubric. But I want students to be able to read an assignment (and re-read as many times as necessary) and be able to create their own framework for what is important in an assignment. I feel that the goal for rubrics is a good one. We want to be objective and fair. But I just think that the idea of increased objectivity and fairness via rubrics is a a bit of an illusion.
