A lot of how we label heroes during wartime is measured by the number of kills, perspective is the most important identifier, heroes on one side will seem like murderers to the other. Perspective is also very important when we consider the fact that history is always written by the winners. In another reality, had the allied forces lost the war, the red baron might have been considered a hero.

No I don't believe so, they were doing the exact same thing as those in the trenches/on the ground - killing - but in a different setting and with arguably only more praise than the soldiers for being able to take part in flying what was then new and advanced technology.

The death rate of pilots was higher than soldiers in the trenches so they were just more higher risk high reward but the charges from the trenches were also high risk and high reward because them charging into enemy lines to infiltrate their side, as a pilot you're doing the same thing, attempting to infiltrate enemy lines so I think all soldiers and participants all deserve recognition for risking their lives to fight for their country regardless of from the ground or the sky, ground kills to sky kills they deserve equal respect.

It makes sense to look up to people who were willing to be pilots back then because of the risks that came with it but that doesn't mean that you value the other soldiers any less. The soldiers that were forced to go over the top to "No Man's Land" had faced just as much danger as any pilot flying overhead.

The skill of flying a plane, wasn't a natural skill. This skill was developed over extreme training, which probably back then was high tech. Each pilot is a hero for aiding in the war
