Advantages
  • The researcher can focus on both qualitative and quantitative issues.
  • Customised.
  • Primary research enables the marketer to focus on specific subjects.
  • Primary research is more up to date.

Disadvantages
  • Compared to secondary research, primary data may be very expensive in preparing and carrying out the research. 
  • To be done properly, primary data collection requires the development and execution of a research plan. It takes longer to undertake primary research than to get secondary information.
  • By the time that the research is complete, it may be out of date.
  • A low response rate has to be expected.

Advantages

  • Secondary research may be the only available source of specific pieces of information (i.e. government data)

Disadvantages
  • The information lacks specificity or does not exactly address the concern.
  • Some external secondary data may be outdated.
  • Internal secondary data such as sales reports and customer databases may only describe existing customers
