With this activity, I will print off sheets with pictures in the first column. Students will identify the pictures and say the words out loud. While saying the words, they will say them slowly, stretching them out to listen for the phonemes (sounds) in each word. Each time they hear a new phoneme they will put a dot in the circles in the second column. For example: Shoe will have two dots because it has two different phonemes.

This book is simply a classic. I do not know of anyone that has not read it or at least heard of it. There have been many spin off books published from it. The story told is simple, the more you have, the more you want. To take the message from the story, you have to learn to be happy with what you have.

I feel it is important for children to understand that sometimes slow and steady can win the race!

The lesson in this book almost leaves me speechless. It is the story of a young girl that starts to compare herself to others and she starts to feel like she might be "too good" for some of the things her mother (who grew up less fortunate) might like. During one of their car rides, the mother stops and wants the family to pick some watercress for dinner that evening. The girl, too worried if someone might see her, has an awful time and does not want to be picking watercress. That night for dinner she pushes the watercress around on her plate but does not eat it. The mother then tells her daughter a story about when she was younger, they did not have much. There were often times they did not even have food to eat. The mother lost her brother due to starvation when she was a young child, so she never takes simple things, such as watercress for granted. After hearing the story, the girl realizes how she is acting and eats the watercress. It is such an important lesson to stop comparing yourself to others. Don't ever start feeling like you're too good for something or someone. There will always be someone less fortunate than you, but there will also always be someone better off than you. Be happy and content with what you have and enjoy your life.

I chose this book for my library because I feel it tells a very valuable story to learn. In life we constantly find ourselves waiting. Whether it be waiting for our food order in a restaurant, waiting in line in the grocery store, or waiting for the next season of your favorite show to come out. I constantly hear myself saying, "I can't wait for the weekend." or "I can't wait until we leave for vacation." Life is so full of waiting and often times wishing the time we have no away hoping for me things we find more fun. The lesson of this book tells that even though you are waiting, you do not have to be waiting alone. If you're waiting for your food in a restaurant, you more than likely have company at the table, enjoy them! If you're waiting in line at the grocery store, take a moment to compliment a stranger. Or if you're waiting for the next season of your favorite show, spend that time doing something else you enjoy doing with your family. Do not spend your time waiting alone!

In this book a child will be transported to another world right along with the main character, Max. In my opinion, the pictures in this book tell the story better than the words do. Most importantly, the story being told teaches a child that even though they might go off to far off lands and they might be the King of that land, sometimes it is better to be in good company, with someone that loves you.

This activity can be so much fun, because this book is so much fun. In what world do we get to live the farm life and have a spider for a best friend? The activity I'd like to use for vocabulary development is simple. This book is full of excellent vocabulary words for students to learn. I would like to print off the vocabulary sheets and go over the definitions a few times in class the week prior, but the important part comes while I am reading the book aloud to the class. While reading if I say a vocabulary word, I want the students to oink like a pig to stop me from reading further. At that time, we can discuss the word, the definition, and discuss the sentence it was used in. This is also an opportunity to discuss antonyms and synonyms if needed.

While looking at the cover and having a glimpse of what is inside, I can close my eyes and get that warm fuzzy feeling, and I know that I am safe. I feel like this book portrays the feelings of every mother in the world, but who more important to read it and learn than lesson than our children. One passage says, "so if you ride to the corner, to the mountains, the sea, there's not a place in this world that I won't be."

It not only shows the reader that you can live through horrendous things and still become wonderful, but it also shows women readers that despite having awful things come their way they can persevere, follow their dreams, and succeed at their craft. This book tells the story of Coco Chanel, Frida Kahlo, and Audrey Hepburn. If the reader has never heard of these three ladies, it is important to learn about them. They came from hardship and changed the world with their art!

This book of poetry will be wonderful for children to read. It will help with the misconception that all poetry must rhyme. Dickenson was such a famous poet; it is unlikely that a person does not know her name. She is famous for writing poetry that made the reader think a little harder and a dig a little deeper to understand the meaning of the poems. What a wonderful way for children to learn about poetry.

Don't these reading corners look so cozy. I take inspiration from each of these pictures. If I were a student wanting to read, I would want a nice plush comfy chair or cot to lay on with some soft pillows. I'd want a nice cozy quiet location so I could read and concentrate on what I was reading. Lastly, I would want a large variety of books to choose from. I hope to incorporate elements from all of these pictures into my classroom reading nook. I want students to crash into the reading nook and get cozy. I want them to feel like they are home, comfortable, and safe, making it easier for them to enter into the world they are reading about. If my student is reading a book about a knight fighting a dragon, I do not want them to be adjusting their seat or wishing they could be more comfortable. Instead, I want my student so wrapped up in the book they believe they are the knight, and they are getting ready to defeat the dragon and save the kingdom.
