The story is entitled this because in life there is always two kinds of everything. On page seven, the last paragraph it states "Only two kinds of daughters, those who are obedient and those who follow their own mind...". Jing-Mei's mother was always pushing her to do things Jing-Mei did not want to do, because of that she never saw the "other side" of her daughter that Jing-Mei always wanted to be. Jing-Mei accepted herself and how she was no prodigy or genius, but a regular girl, yet her mother thought otherwise. On page nine in the last paragraph it says, "After I had played them both a few times, I realized they were two halves of the same song". After reading this, you can notice that this could be an analogy to her life. The second song was described "Longer but faster," almost like her life in the beginning because all her mom did was put her through memorizing the bible pages, playing the piano and so much more so quickly and for a long period of time. The first song though was described as "Shorter but slower," life her life after her mom forcing her to do things came to an end because she finally felt like nothing was pushing her to be great and someone she's not, and because of that life moved "Slower" for her and more calm and steady.

Jing-Mei's mother wants Jing-Mei to be something great and that means she does not want Jing-Mei to waste her life. On page 4, paragraph 2 it says, "Who ask you to be genius, only ask you be your best for your sake," this is evidence that it is true that Jing-Mei's mother wants her to be the best, but just not how Jing-Mei sees it. Jing-Mei thinks her mom just wants her to be this amazing person thats better than everyone else, but that's not entirely true. Jing-Mei's mother wants her to be great because in her life in China, she wish she was better and just wants the best for her daughter. Her mother was always alienated on the idea of fame and the people on the tv like on page 3 paragraph 3 when it starts to explain about her mother being entranced by the music, she wanted her daughter to be on that stage and getting flowers and trophies, but Jing-Mei never did.

Jing-Mei's mother has such high expectations for her because she wants her to be better than her when she was younger. In paragraph 3 on page one it explains, "She had come to San Francisco in 1949 after losing everything in China. Her mother, father, home, first husband, and her two twin baby girls." Her mother believed that you could be and do anything you wanted in America, especially become famous. Her mother always wanted her to be the best because she herself was not the best and she just wants to see her become the person she never got to be. Jing-Mei does not understand the emotional hardship her mother went through in China losing everything, she just sees it as her mother being hard on her. Jing-Mei's mother just wants her life to be easy and the best and in order for her to be that in her words on page seven on the last paragraph, she wants an "Obedient daughter".

Jing-Mei's internal conflict was much stronger than external conflict. On page 2, third to last paragraph it explains, "After seeing, once again, my mother's disappointed face, Something inside of me began to die". She is mad at herself because she can't be the person her mom wants her to be, so much so that she called herself an "Ugly girl" and an "Ordinary face" in the third to last paragraph on page 2 as-well. On page seven, second to last paragraph, there is an example of external conflict with her mother explained, "She was frighteningly strong, half pulling, half carrying me towards the piano as I kicked the throw rugs under my feet". She is refusing her mothers orders emotional and physically by resisting her because she no longer wants to be put through the misery.

Jing-Mei's desires differ from her mothers because of her expectations rather than her wants. On page two, second to last paragraph she states, " I won't let her change me, I wont be what I'm not". Jing-Mei wants to be a regular girl who does not have to worry about her mother pressuring her into doing things she does not want to do. Jing-Mei's mother wants her to be the child who is famous and you see on the TV giving autographs. Jing-Mei's desires are very different because they have lived different lives, Jing-Mei's life was much easier starting with the fact that she has not lost everything like her mother.
