  Social and economic power in different classes
  • Emphasis on the role of philosophy in keeping up with frameworks of socio-political power.  E.g., there are presented ideas which form the basis of economic or political theory through the categories of prioritizing and presenting others' speech in the society. the result shows how Atonement portrays the cicumstances of British society. Robbie Turner is a character that McEwan uses to exemplify the advantages and disadvantages of being an educated member of the lower class.
   Truth
  • Postmodernism is the theory of truth. there is no absolute reality or truth in Atonement. E g., Briony's interpretation of what happened to Lola.
    intertextuality
  • the novel acknowledges that it is a written text. By acknowledging that it's a written work, Atonement is able to ask different questions and inspire different responses than if it were simply the straightforward story of Briony or Robbie or Cecilia.

Atonement not only dramatizes in its plot, but self-consciously illustrates at the level of its style of prose narrative in which attention is directed to the process of fictive composition. McEwan's(the writer) metafictional strategies call attention to the many changes Briony made to her manuscript in her attempt to make amends for the wrong things she has done. The epilogue in the novel is what makes the text a metafiction, rather than a novel with metafictional asides. It contains multiple references involved in writing a convincing piece of fiction. the metafiction of the novel-Atonement links to Briony's own writing achievement.
