I go up with an amazing shot, 

It looks like a dot,

feeling like a mid-range dead-eye,

ball soaring through the sky,

Dad got to the hoop,

SMMMACK, off the glass

Silence, Good block, kid

Oh yeah, GET BIG, SON, 2-time high school star comin’ atcha!

Dad goes up for a dunk, straight to the rack.

Slam! goes the ball through the hoop. 

(noun) 

An event causing great and often sudden damage and suffering 

(Michael) Like: It was a catastrophe when my Grandma fell down a flight of stairs. 

(David) Like: My Mom losing her Job one year ago, having to go 3 months without heat was a catastrophe. 

(Owen) Like: It was a catastrophe when I heard my Mom crying on the phone coming to pick me up, the doctor telling her that my dad isn’t looking good. 

But my dad’s dying,

And my mind’s overflowing with doubt.

I try to regain confidence,

But it’s not gonna happen without him.

I walk over to the paper with the names.

Of the guys on the team,

Jojo Roberts,

David Johnson,

Andi Anderson,

Stevie Wonder,

Jaquis Meekins,

Roberto Ramirez,

Juan Rodriguez, 

Ming Lee,

But I was nowhere on the list,

and I knew what that meant.

In the backyard, 

I can’t make a shot,

I can’t do anything but brick,

I can’t be the best.

I can’t focus without my mentor,

I can’t do it without my dad.

Mom, I didn’t make the team 

While the season is being played, 

I need my game to improve.

Every time I even look at a ball

I remember

But I have to keep moving on

My mom said I need confidence 

I think to myself

I remember the times my dad and I would play one on one together, but that was very long ago.

I remember when I was ready for anything that came my way, in basketball.

I remember when my dad first taught me how to play basketball, and when he first taught me how to shoot a ball into the hoop. 

I remember being able to do all these things with him. 

But, that was all before he died.

One night 

I will always remember it. 

My dad 

Even though it is strange 

He told me that he will always be with me

He told me to always have confidence in myself. 

He said you can do anything you want to do

This year had the most competition 

I wasn’t ready to get cut this year

Thinking of my dad made me perform better

We ran 2 v 2 in the tryouts

hits me in the corner

Ming thinks he is going to get an easy layup

 I used to talk to my Dad before games,

But I could feel he was with me 

Feeling that made me have all 

The confidence in the world

I’m going to put on a show 

Michael Jordan dropped 51 

points in last night’s game

That sets a new record for most points in a game

But that’s not the only record that was broken that night

Michael also passed the ball a ton and ended up with 14 assists

Having a clouded mind last year, and making a comeback this year

Wow, I guess having and a high self-esteem really pays off 

But there is still one more record

I remember my first day of football when I was 7 years old. I hated it.

I remember eating and out the window I saw a black and blue bmx zoom by my living room window. “HEY THAT’S MY BIKE!”

I remember my sisters and I running around and playing in the big front yard. 

I remember the time my dad beat me in a race, it was the last time.

I remember my first day at Upper Dublin, people crowding around me. That day was the day I met my best friend.

I remember my old school in Mount Airy. It’s much bigger than sandy run.

I remember when I was excited to school.

I remember the time I first go an xbox, it was a christmas present.

I remember my dog moka, she fought with my cat.

I remember my family and I going to applebees for every birthday 3 years straight.

Definition of Poetry

Poetry is something that has rhythm and rhyme. All poems will evoke an emotion through either the figurative language or the way it sounds. All poems trigger emotion by usually having a deeper more intense meaning. You can interpret poetry in many different ways making it almost anything. “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks and Concrete Poem #3 are good examples of poetry they have rhythm, rhyme, evoke emotions and have deeper meanings.

First, “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks is a good form of poetry because it has repetition and rhyme. The poem, it has many lines of rhythm, repetition, and rhyming like “We lurk late. We/strike straight.” That line had rhythm, rhyme and even has a deeper meaning. “We Real Cool” was written during the Harlem Renaissance so it had a lot of rhythms and has many deeper feelings.

Second, A form of concrete poems is Blackout Poems. Blackout poems are a very good poem type that has evokes emotion for the person who is reading the poem. Blackout poems are types of poems that the author colored the whole page but left in a couple of words that make a totally new poem. These poems are usually created to make a deeper meaning or change the meaning of what the original paper was.  “Imagine a life where all your time is spent on things you want/I’m writing to let you know that/today is your final day of/undefined future/do what you want/all over the world/people are/ rewriting/their own/future.” This was one of the different blackout poems that someone has made. They took those words from a book and created something that was very meaningful. 

Finally, Another type of poetry is rap, rap is something that many people know and do. Rapping is spoken word poetry with a beat and a rhythm. It is one of the most iconic ways to speak poetry. Many raps are happy and upbeat but also may have a darker or more sad meaning behind them, sometimes masked by the beat of the music. Eminem is one the most iconic people that rap. “When I'm gone just carry on don’t mourn. Rejoice every time you hear the sound of my voice.” That is a lyric from Eminem’s song “When I’m Gone”. It is a very meaning lyric and he is trying to tell his daughter to not give up when he passes and to just keep going. This is only one of the verses or stanzas that rap, in general, has that shows emotion and triggers an emotion for the person who is hearing it. 

    You can find poetry in almost everything. The definition of poetry is something with a rhythm, something that evokes an emotion from someone. Poetry is something with a rhythm like “We Real Cool” and Eminem “Lose Yourself”. Poetry triggers emotion with a deeper meaning like concrete poems.
