In 2024 Dartmouth had many students who came as refugees and were being housed a local hotel. Students were placed in my Pre Ap Class, and with the help of my co-teacher we modified many lessons to fit their needs, and help them grasp the language, even when not much guidance was given on how to handle students who only spoke Spanish.

Students read in book clubs, and then had to write a colloaborative book review. As an individual they had to write an essay on their book, and also come up with a creative artificat from a specific genre. Some students created postcards, creative journals and diaries, as well as conspiracy boards for their books.

E9 Benchmark Example and Rationale

• Our end goal for summative writing is now firmly established as the Senior Capstone Project, which has replaced the Senior Research Paper. This year the department moved from last year’s pilot program to this year’s full implementation.

• We re-established through this process of posters and discussion that our Grade 9 and 10 summative assignments will continue to scaffold synthesis and basic research skills such as source selection, integration of evidence, citations/signal phrases, and information gathering.

• Grade 11 students will continue to write our traditional research paper, making the leap to topic selection and independent research.

• Grade 12 students will engage in deeper levels of choice and reflection with the Senior Capstone.

This year I took three courses through Andrews University. I took a mindfulness course to help myself with teacher burn out and stress. I also took a course about AI, which was really awesome. It was cool to see what AI can do in a classroom, and how it can help save teachers time and deepen student learning. The fincal course was about close reading, which really helped me edit my Night unit to help students deepend their understanding of such a complex text.
