I've never felt so motivated about doing research. I stayed up until 2am doing it. I was amazed at the facts I would find. The beginning of the research though, was horrible. The only name I knew on the list was Ziraldo. So I started searching about the artists except Ziraldo, I would not do about him. because i already know him, and so does the rest of my colleagues, i want to know about more artist, not the same ones over and over again. besides i really don't like his drawings. and just one really caught my attention. Odilon Moraes. his way of drawing was so deep in such shallow forms. after discovering him I felt really sad, which demotivates me, because I still needed another one obligatory artist to research. I ended up with Veridiana S. Hours later, when it was night time, I started the research itself, once I was not so demotivated. I started with the one I liked the most, Odilon. And because of that when I started researching Veridiana it felt like a really bummer. Guess with research is the same as food, I should save the best for last.
Because of the artists recommended I felt really inspired by children's book and searched Eva Furnari, my most beloved children's book writer and illustrator! how I loved doing her research and just walking over my child steps. my childish feelings and memories, my favorite books and stories from her, and how playful it was to see the images as a kid over and over again. that good feeling took me to another greater research. and i researched the golden ticket [in my opition] in my whole Research Task: The Gruffalo.
the best children book so far. the gruffalo is smart and has amazing illustrations that had always caught my attention.
i felt as the illustrators recommended where not good for the whole proposal: the end of the world. most of them are Jabuti prizes winners.
today it got me really confused in the moment when i had to put together in a drawing the inspiration from the research. i could only think of kids. but not the miserable sad ones, the happy ones that read the gruffalo or nós.
when we are illustrating we have to !really! have in mind our target audience, it's the key to a successful work. the public have to understand it. then comes the most dificult part, realating your drawing styles and ideas to the public, and mixing it all together. your goal is to make the perfect cake mixture, so when you baked it and give it to the people they will enjoy it.
todaýs exercise was extremely pleasant. i loved it. not having to deal with all the first steps of a drawing (which are the most difficult parts for me) and only having to deal with DETAILS was like a dream come true. just perfect. i really wish i can do some future work with someone like this. hope i find that person.
in the end the only illustrations i did today were the ones on the exercise, i still need a more concrete idea on what is the "ënd" i will be aiming. i really loved them. my current hybrid style. the mixture between the doodley and the realistic drawing, I still cannot combine them in the same "part" of the drawing. when i started the illustration on the beginning of the exercise i doodled it, a cute woman based on Gabi. and on the end i loved how there were people that combined a more realistic trace to my doodle girl. i'm gonna start doing that! pretty sure it's gonna make me more pleased with my results.

It has been really hard to bring up the narrative to my drawings, specially because I'm still not sure on how to do it. stories have never been my strong point, I've actually always struggled with narratives, my essays on high school were always mediocre. I never got a low grade, but it was rare for me to gain a A, and I believe i've never got a A+, not in high school at least.
I always go around and around
in a story and never get anywhere besides a confusing beginning. My creativity really sucks at this point. So I'm still not sure what I'm going for here....
Today I followed the initial plans, and started drawing some tombstone with statues, sketches actually, based on really really gorgeous statues that I found in Google. The sketches looked beautiful, it would be a pleasant result, but there is something bothering me, it sounds really weak, and boring....
For the scale transformation, I think I handle it. I haven't bought a A2 paper yet, but I've seen it, and it is a lot smaller then I imagined it would be. since I intend to do the basic lines and then work the drawing out with watercolours it will be realistically easy, watercolour is really nice to work with, and don't require precision at all, so just from a nice sketch I can achieve a really good drawing.
I intend to really do some test illustrations on my sketch book tomorrow at home.
My partner from FAD1 is called Beatriz. I believe she was paired for me by someone who really knows me! we have too much in common, we love a lot of similar things.
She is doing a really cute project, with cute drawings. She wants to do too much in little time though, but I she is like this for ever, so I'm pretty sure she can cope with it really well. She is doing the basics: binded books, some t-shirts, eco bags, and original drawings. The prices are still a bit off for some of them, but it is something that can easily be changed.
Im not really sure if there is really anything I can do... so a offered my help if she needs it, basically with manual stuff, like printing the drawings and so on....

The End of the World Day 04 - Reflection

With the idea I got from my mom yesterday I started my research. I read the first 2 chapters of Revelation, and remembered that when I was reading Ezekiel we had the visions of the cherubim, all four of them. At jw.org I started linking the references. It is an amazing site, the most accessible way of studying the bible in my opinion. There are tools that makes it really easy to relate passages on one book to another. So I jumped back from Revelation to Ezekiel. Ezekiel is one of my favourite books, after Luke. In the first 3 chapters we read of the visions he sees by the river Quibar, the 4 cherubim and Jehovah; 4-24: Jehova's judgment against Jerusalem and her people; 25-32: surrounding nations receive their judgment throughout Ezekiel's visions; 40-48: vision of the temple for Jehovah's high standards for true worship.
While reading the verses about the cherubim appearances there are little letters related to some of the verses, those letters take us to a correlation of that verse with another passage of the bible. By that I discovered that Ezekiel sees 4 wings, as for John and Isaías, they see 6 wings, so I went for 6.
Now a have a story to my drawings.
I have the impression that my images are telling history, a passage of the bible, but it's not easy to get it right away, most of us do not know a cherubim appearance, we always imagine a little fatty angel, not the 4 headed creature that it actually is.
I started something different, drawing a creature with a description that does not match with no other animal known to live on the Earth. So I look at some references from people that tried to draw them, just as I am doing, I based myself a little bit on them, but i changed positions and colours of the wings.
First I drew some sketches of the animals of each face: Eagle, Bull and Lion. Then I proceeded to drawing what came to my mind of that mixture of animals.
This idea that my mom had of reading the end of the world according to the Bible was amazing, I am really liking the possibilities that this new idea brings.
At home I almost finished the first Cherubim. Since my watercolours are really bad I used my acrylics with water instead. The result came really nice! My dad thought it is Wonderfull.

Today I brought my cherubim, and finished it during AM time. Just some details were missing, I finished the outer wings with a more yellowish tone to them than whitish. With that each pair got a different colour to them, brown, white and light yellow. I got Vera's watercolours and painted their feet, her watercolours are really amazing, and since I really enjoyed the result of yesterday's test of the pallet for the cherubim with hers material, I asked if I could use again. I did the wings with acrylics, because they have more density and I wanted the last layers to "pop". I did the man's face with watercolour, and finished the eagle's face with watercolours as well. At the end I tried the Cooper on the feet, just lightly, but I intend to get it stronger. And I still need to do the golden eyes and final coloration on the creature.
Im really satisfied with this final result, If I do not change my mind, I will use it on the final outcome.
Since I todays professor was Roger, whose ideas are incredible, I asked him what kind of background we liked better, the background with a story or just the plain background. We got to agree that I should to a background with a colour related to each cherubim plague and do a little detail beneath them representing it more clearly.
I did the backgrounds with a really washed watercolour, and turned the paper around so it could drip in some nice effect. By the way, I bought the A2 papers today, and I'm using it to do the background.
Since I used a lot of water it's taking too long to dry, and once I'm home I will try to work a little bit more on them, and maybe start the second cherubim.

- I lost the original reflection.
"How the narrative planned is appearing on a big scale?"
I've always had a huge difficulty in making up narratives. It has always been my weakness, and it still is. I remember on a work I had for middle school I did the drawings, and asked for my friend to do all the narrative.
This time I tried to contour this obstacle in a more "developing" way, instead of creating something from the very beginning i chose to illustrate a story, developing a little personal narative in the drawing. There is no visual record of the creatures mentioned on the Bible, just the written record, thus I tried to assimilate the narrative on the drawing by trying to work with the background of the creature. The result was not a 4 pannel continuous story, but rather a 4 pannel installation telling the same story on a linear order, each pannel was put in a way that the order of view was the same as the openning of each scroll and calling of each cherub.
I have the impression that my images are working as a moment of a story, the exact moment of the calling of the end of the world. It is of major importance the knowledge of the scriptures for the correct understanting. Without that the images work more as a depiction than a narrative, as happened in the exercise proposed today. In this exercise we were supposed to pair up with someone and ask of them what did they see/undestand on our work, how they read it. In my case my friend said that the word that came to her mind as she saw the pannels was "Apocalypse" and the phrase that came to her mind was "The Apocalypse is coming."
That result was rather pleasing/fulfilling for me. It representent the Apocalypse as I wanted, it showed the end of the world in a certain way, even though the narrative behind it was not known to my pair.
Also today I just finished every thing. Did the feet and the cherub that was missing (men faced) and the little symbols representing each horseman brought from each scroll. I bought a spray can of gold paint and sprayed it all over the cherubim, leaving the background intact, to achieve the golden shining appearance of them. The result was incredible, it did so much for my drawings and the composition, because all the cherubim became likely. It gave a type of order and similarity to the project.

Today wasn´t actually my first day for the Game Project! It is the beginning of my second week, I began last monday brainstorming some ideas.
After reading the brief my first idea was:
A PAINTING GAME - in which one would withdraw a number from throwing a dice corresponding to a previously chosen color and paint a a certain area on a drawing made by yours truly; it would not have a winner and it could be played alone or with as many people that could fit painting the paper;
My second idea was:
A JOGO DO MICO - with artists and one of their masterpiece OR friends and their works OR halfs of friends.
I started drawing on Saturday, after once I saw a video on painting and line working on Photoshop, I did about six drawings, and ended up with 2 usable drawings for the project. The first one was actually an old school pin up that I used as an experiment to try and see if I understood the drawing technics, so it wasn´t aimed at the project.
The problem with the other ones was: Daniela. Dani just wouldn´t match any old school hairstyles I could find, I even tried Marylin Monroe´s iconic hair, and she just would not look good with any of them, later she explained to me that it was because she had a pretty large face, which turned out to be true. So I did a large elf hair on her, and it actually worked, so I had to change Vera! (who was my first model for the drawings) I had done her in an old school tattoo style as a gipsy adaptation, but since Dani couldn´t fit that style, I changed everything! including the theme of the drawings! Now it is: the way I see them or think they would look good. I am a really good friend. So I ended with a Elven Dni and a índia Vera.
As for today, I started someone elses´s drawing, the chosen one is Raissa. And it´s amazing how much of a difference a hair colour and cut can do to a person. Instead of Raissa´s iconic red hair with curls, I did badass Raissa with a black straight bob cut.
It is a really freeing experience. There is so many things I can do, no boundaries.
Also I talked to Henry and we developed my idea, instead of friends and their works we settled for their faces split in halfs, and he even gave me an idea on what material to use (plastic de encadernation)

DAY ONE

Today was a very exciting day for me, I’m trying to change some aspects on my life, so I woke up early and meditated, and it cleared my thoughts for the day! So once at ebac we had a lecture from Lucia Loeb, there was a loooot of information and exemples, but I managed to gather the ones I liked the most, specially Anselm Kiefer, his paintings that were also done on the books used as exemples, were “indescritível” with a huge mix of feelings, but preserving a lot of darkness, sadness, stillness, with details that broke the black and the emptiness, and yet were just as morbid as the other elements, dead flowers, curved branches, lots of grey, and yet it was the most impactful exemple of all the artists shown. I must be careful though, I suppose if i look at it in a bad day, I will become even sadder, just to describe how impactful they were for me. During the lecture I manage to write some ideas! But most of them were related to the content of the books I have: medicine / body / flesh / diseases. So morbid and clinical ideas came, a book of X-Rays collections with the name of a bone: like “Ulna”, “Radio”, “Tarso”, one full with fake blood spilling from certain key words about circulation, cut in shapes of veins, one about the respiratory system with the shape of lungs burnt by the fire of smoking, one only with images, with the texts cut off or censured showing only the impactful images without a context... But then I had the ideia that I want to follow, a cute very personal one, it’s not artistic or deep or with lots of feelings as people expect from art students, it’s rather cute and worthy of a hug, slimes destroying the books in their innocence, I am hoping to add really meaningful titles to the books, like: how to achieve happiness or how to not be sad anymore, how to overcome the world. And the books are going to be disintegrating inside the naive slimes, representing a certain incapacity of the men to achieve the circunstancial unanswered questions that surround us, they naive slimes represent a certain mocking on those men, such simple form of life, not caring about existing and simply destroying a valuable, yet unnecessary, object for men.

Today we had a introduction on how to prepare a laser cut appropriate vector on Adobe Illustrator with Alex. AI is very intuitive and easy to use, most of the tools you will need are super easy to find, they are located in the most important menus, and their names are pretty straightforward, like Align or Direct Selection.
You need to vectorize your image, which means they are gonna be made of points and not pixels, and won't loose definition even if you zoom in a lot, the vectorized form will be used on the software for cutting. Vectorized images since they are not made of pixels, don't variate in intensity of color, they have a single color for a single determined space, and won't loose that aspect of color when approaching another vectorized form. Vectors are really used for outlines, in the cutting process we use the outlines to determinate the cutting areas. The configuration is RGB only, the R determines the full cutting line, Blue determines a outline, and green is used for "painting"or burning a certain area to add color or texture.
The workshop was a little bit long though, it was pretty explanatory but had a lot of repetition of the exercises. Alex is a great educator, he is really patient and does care about our learning, so if we need a certain help or do not understand something he will explain it in a different way in which we might understand, and if not he will show as many times we need to learn it. In the first 40 minutes or so of the workshop we basically knew everything, the rest though was just repetition of what we saw on the first part, I really lost the focus here (I could walk with a blank post-it all the time, and once I loose focus I can put it in a wall or a surface and stare at it until I clear my mind and will be able focus again). As Carlos suggested, something I would change about that part would be: previously ask the students to make a sketch to be used during the workshop to vectorize it and see in first hand with our own work, how vectorizing works so we can use it on projects.
In the afternoon we went to the Cultural Space of Porto Seguro, to meet their FabLab, where they permit the use of some equipments, including the laser cutting machine, 3d printer, fine art printer, metal cutting stations, a silk screen table and a few others. They reserve a 2h time on fridays for public use of the equipments, provided one had gotten in contact with them and reserved the time previously, so it is really accessible, we are allowed to use everything in there provided we bring the material need (for exemple: the paper we are going to use, the files on usb or email...); they also provide a "consultoria de projeto", six encounters of two hours during week days in which they provide assistance for software use and project development, under the fare of $25 or $50 depending on rather you are a student or not. The space is great, really well illuminated and tidy, it's easy to walk and work in it and the personnel are really nice too and do seem to be able to offer a good assistance. WHY THIS CAN BE USEFUL FOR IN THE FUTURE?
After the presentation we were invited to visit the exhibition on the other floors, it was called Meteorológica.

There were some material ideas, but I can get better results by doing one little step at a time. So, right now I’m just focusing on doing the drawings of my colleagues and that’s enough.

My action planning is going pretty well, my deadline is Sunday to finish the drawings and then start thinking about the materials

Day 03 was my independent study day, I went to Ebac to talk to Carlos, and got the following feedback:
In My Annotations I Must show:
1. VISUAL DOCUMENTATION
2. CONTEXT
Millôr Exhibition , IMS 2018
Who the artist is (short)
3. WRITE WHAt CAUGHT MY ATTENTION, what inspired or challenged me.
4. HOW CAN I CONNECT THE SOURCE (ex: Millôr) WITH MY PROJECT / PRACTICE!
On this day I fast printed some Samples of the drawings just to have an idea on how they would look small and if I should add or take out details.
I also told Carlos how I wanted the name of the game to be related to him, since he is the Joker Card, and he said he would think and tell me later. (He than said I should call it JooBaJoo (Bajoo de Cadjoo). Sharing thoughts is great for growth, just as learned right now. maybe u are stuck in ur own mind and if y articulate that someone might just say something that complete saves you
My game connects directly with the first players of it, my friends, just because it is their faces on the card, I think this gives a really personal connection between them, so even if they don’t appreciate the game on it’s own, they will still like it, or even love it because it’s their images there. So, considering my target public is the people from the drawings, I’m pretty sure their experience with the game will be really nice.

My research only helped me to the the point of rules and mechanism of the game itself. The development of what makes the game “mine” had nothing to do with the research, it was the idea that I developed in my mind of using my colleagues as my models for my game.

On this day I planned the "Termo de Permissão de Uso de Imagem" as a risk assessment criteria, so I could use my colleagues facial images without further complications for me, such as a small disagreement or even a lawful thing. On this term they attest they have full knowledge that I intend to use their image in the way i feel most pleased with and that they give me full permition on that matter. On the term they also write their ull names, their RG and finish with their signature. For no possible confusion I signed the papers with my name, RG and CPF.
The documents were attached to my sketchbook (3rd) and there are no copies of them.
I always have exactly ONE idea, it’s really hard to get creative and have other ideas. So pretty much on the first time I read the brief. I have a pretty lazy brain, I trained my brain during school to be smart in a logical chronological way: so I proceed in the logical world in the more logical way possible, which is also a problem, because you can only solve equations up to a point without creativity, the discovery of physical phenomenons comes from creativity and a wide thinking mind. Therefore I trained my brain to be basically a computer: see a problem and solve it in a way I’ve already seen before.

Unfortunately That is my pattern, of thinking straight away. If I try to think more than once I get extremely mind tired, it’s really exhausting. Lately I tried to talk to my friends about my ideas, so I could try to develop more ideas instead of just one. It’s a really hard work in progress, but every single thing start small, gator are born really tiny and so are snapping turtles.

Then I execute my idea right away before I lose it, I have the bad habit of not being able to transform my thoughts into words.

Today I started developing the cards, i cutted pieces of the watercolor paper with the measure of 10x8 cm, and borrowed Pietra's side cutter to make round edges and make the cards look more professional.
I drew chinese clouds patterns on once side of all the cards
Today I also shot the video! It was a marvelous experience, being the "director" to a visual recording is amazing, I asked Isa Orsi to present it since I hate my appearance, the first shot did not work, so i cuted it after a little while. We then talked about what Isa should say, and when she was supposed to say the name of the game she forgot, and I cuted the video and made a really funny edition on that! We then did 2 takes of the presentation, showing the cards and giving a summary on how to play the game. Then I wanted to record a how to play, I went and invited Raissa who is also gorgeous, and explained the game and highlighted some things I wanted them to say, they were a bit confused but managed to say everything, a little mixed up, but they did it. They played the game and I couldn't have asked for a better shot than that! Both were really excited and had fun playing it, and that appeared in the video, it was really nice, funny and easy going. I edited the video that day, cutted in a way to make it look like a youtube video and added effects such as Curb Your Enthusiasm theme and spongebob's passing of the time vinheta.
I finished the cards today too, I cutted the printed images, sprayed the blank cards with a solution of orange Nanquim on both sides to make a colorful pattern, then once it was dry I glued the circles I had cutted and them on top of it I glued the portrait, and that's what I did for all the cards. So it would be ready for the video!

Yesterday night I recieved the incentive I needed, my mom said that in "any hipotesis" I would do the Slime Project, so I started trying to think about different ideas, and looking at a really old book titled: "Windows 97 Sem Mistérios" I got inspired to do a Technological advancement inspired work. Cutting the Windows and placing a Kindle tablet inside it would provide a really recent tech touch to it, and doing the same with some other book but placing a USB pendrive device inside it would provide a "recent" development idea. Would the usb be a book? If it contained number and numbers of books inside it? And would the Kindle be a book too? As a fact it is way easier to imagine a Kindle being a book than a USB pendrive.

And Finally
8 Algo que divulga conhecimento ou instrui como se fosse um livro.
In the physical dictionary I found a way more interesting definition about how a book is supposed to be a thing that teaches or contains knowledge that can be passed through people.
Based on these ideas I proposed that project and recorded the details in the following audio file.
Finally on this day I started looking for books that I could use on the USB idea, since I had already found the book for the Kindle idea. As I searched for some books I found Drummond de Andrade's "Sentimento do Mundo". The book really caught my attention, so I took it to my room and quickly opened it in the middle section and started ripping it, a feeling of how the World is tearing apart, then I got some thread and needle and sewed that teared part in a way that would be a huge space between the parts, like a long thread trying to maintain the two parts together, and I thought of displaying it that way, the world tearing apart. I then felt like I should dirty it, and sprayed some clean water on top of the pages as the clean rain that falls, and on the bottom part of the book I dripped some coffee and its powder, to kind of represent how the water comes dirty after passing through the Earth.
Once that dried I looked at the book and thought it could be more clear about how the World feels, so I thought of the phrases "Natureza Morta (Still Life/Dead Nature) / Cidade Viva (Alive City) representing how we're killing the nature (forests, animals, water sources...) in favor of the growth of the cities. So I started blocking phrases of the book to create those phrases, but I could only create "Natureza Morta" on the middle pages (most important ones), so I started just writing that on every page.

In this day I started my final outcome, the Pain books. It was my first contact with them, two medicine books, one with a hard cover and the other one with a soft cover, I started with the soft one, tearing some of its pages, but just a few, sosome methen I turned it around and felt like I should work with the cover first. I wanted to say something different on the cover, like a subliminar mesage, I tried to make some medical words out of the title but couldn't figure it out, so I decided to let the word pain explicit, anad saved it for later. So I turned to the pages I had torn and started painting them abstractly, and thats what I did for the day

Carlos came to me and annalyzed my tests so far, and said si should do a fat book, like I was trying to figure out, I started painting a stiff page on the hard cover book.
I did the tests with that, and go to the conclusion on how I would make the two books: the hard one would be a interactive book with just a few pages representing pain, and the other one would be a open book with the pain in it so strong and so bad it wants to come out. I took my things home and started working there.

I spent my whole weekend locked in my room working on the books, I focused on the open book more this time, I started painting it with acrylics in brownish colours, and filling between the pages with torn pieces of paper, so it would become inflated. I painted it all with the brownish tone, since they felt more pains for me, and on Sunday I did the back structure to hold the book and the sewed parts on the cover.

For the hard one I started working on the cover before the pages, and had the idea of cutting another hard book’s cover in some geometric pieces, I used that as a skin that was tearing apart of the book, and painted it in a fleshy style and once I was satisfied I glued it to the cover and started painting the gaps. I wanted to add something more, so I did a dark red slime and put I all over the cover.

After talking to my partner she told me I’d be better if we did the illustrations digitally, so I did the sketches by hand and we digitalized them in photoshop, on Wednesday night I had been presented with a drawing tablet, so I’ve been developing my drawing methods on it since then. Today Vera gave me some pretty amazing advices, my octopus went from really amateur “paint” style to a very good illustrator kind of work, the subtlety of the lines made the work 200% better and shading and lighting are beautiful now.

My mistake was to trust too much on someone who wasn’t giving much on return. Instead of taking a big part on my hands, I chose to divide the work, and if things had turned out okay we would have meet the deadline with everything ready on time, but that did not happened, unfortunately today, one day before presentation, I realized that she left everything we agreed she would do at home to do during class hours and that really bummed me.

Realistically I can accomplish the last drawings, the finalization of the mark up , design the A3 sheets and the A3 prints
