Redefining what a prison is is the way forward. From my understanding, a prison is supposed to restrict freedom, making it an undesirable place to be. In our fulfillment of this basic function of a prison - and since prisoners are seen as scum of the earth - we have chosen to ignore basic human needs that would do the prisoners more harm than good in the long run. But what do we care?
So redefining what a prison is; allowing certain necessary freedoms - not to the point where the prison resembles a boarding school - is very important. With that definition, we can reinvent the prison system.
