Tunis was and is still currently a primarily Muslim country. With this, the people followed many cultural standards in accordance to this religion regarding clothing, marriage, holidays, and general courtesies.

A great example of this could be found in pages 43-45 of Medieval Sourcebook: Ibn Battuta: Travels in Asia and Africa 1325-1354. Here, Ibn is visiting Tunis during a festival celebrating the Breaking of the Fast. He notes while joining his group in prayer that large numbers of people participated in their richest apparel and bravery.

From Ibn’s adventure and the initial statement, it can be made clear that Muslim traditions were a significant part of the city’s culture and the majority of citizens were expected to abide by Muslim customs.
