In 1917 Pershing was appointed to be Commander in Chief of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) to assist with the allied forces against German forces

Transferred the U.S. Army from 130,000 men to and Army of 2 million.

Improved the military combat boot because many suffered from "trench boot"

Exercised great control over the Army and was given the authority to run his command as he saw fit

Had a great understanding of the political nature of warfare

demonstrated his abilities to control complex operations

Pershing did not try to hide the truth or manipulate facts for political effect but understood the strictures of civilian control over the military and worked the system in efforts to change them

Split his large army into two armies in order to give more control over the troops. Pershing put his pride aside and made the best decision for the troops. He was able to focus more on the efforts in France when he did this.

Splitting the armies and allowing more leadership control over the armies was one of his better traits as he was able to set aside his leadership limitations and delegate the tasks to other leadership.

Pershing's decisions to execute St. Mihiel offense did not go as planned and this caused many problems for the AEF.
During the efforts between October 4th through 16th of the war many American lives were taken and soildiers strayed from their post. Routes for food, water and supplies were comprimised therefore troops were unable to recieve the necessary items to keep them alive.
