This article details information revolving around counseling program advocacy. It considers the position statement and committment that counselors make to have a positive impact on student achievement, school climate and the school’s academic mission. However; to stay true to this, we must challenge the notion that we have to fulfill all "other duties" as assigned, especially if it will hinder the ability to meet youth's needs.

The ASCA is offering a webinar that sheds light on the complications of working with minors in an educational setting. It challenges professionals to consider how one should behave when a matter surfaces that requires adherence to the standard that a counselor will affirm all students, yet in doing so, their own personal values will be compromised.

Another matter brought to the forefront is in the arena of privacy. Counselors must carefully consider wheter or not disclosing a student's personal information is justified due to substantial interest. Furthermore, a counselor must consider that at their decision may be scrutinized and legally challenged.

This article addresses ethical wonderings in regard to teacher collaboration. For instance, how to move forward with a teacher that rejects your request to enter and implement best practices in their classroom.

It also explains how important it is to have a secure and trusting relationship with the School Principal. This way, you may share experiences and observations of teachers without fear of retribution or penalty for your colleague. The implication is that there is a mutual respect and understanding that both the principal and counselor need to collaborate with the teacher for student and family success.

In my internet research of this topic, I discovered a relavent blog at studentcounselor. org. The blog discusses how pertinent it is to share sensitive information with a parent's consent. Otherwise a counselor needs to be ready to prove sharing a student's information is due to a substantial interest that outweighs the student's right to privacy.

In my pusuit of more debate on this topic, I searched the Angelo State University Library. It is here where I came acros a book titled "School Discipline and Safety" by Susan Eckes and Charles Russo. The book closely examines the viability of In Loco Parentis. It considers cases where this notion has been abused and whether ot not it is outdated specifically in its correlation with student discipline.

I am learning that there is a delicate dance occurring between parents and counselors as they must operate in a spirit of collaboration to best serve the student. The general acceptance of this interdependent dynamic can be demonstrated in the Unites States adoption of the In Loco Parentis doctrine. In Loco Parentis very literally translates as “in place of the parent.” This speaks to how parents relinquish physical control of theirs child by sending them to school. In turn, parents are transferring certain responsibilities to school personnel. (Eckes & Russo, 2012)
It seems that when this doctrine was first implemented, as early as the 1700s, there was a focus on student discipline. School masters reserved the right and immunity to act as a parent in" restraining or correcting" a youth to ensure their academic development. However, there has been an added component of this standard in more recent times.
Educators not only share similar prerogatives as parents in correction but they also have a duty to protect youth from serious and foreseeable harm. This is of special interest to School Counselors because there is no one on campus more responsible for the socio emotional wellness of a child.
A scenario where this would be highly considered is when a child writes in their journal super dark thoughts and it is seen by their teacher and submitted to the counselor. The teacher and student are then charged with more resonsibility to protect the student and the child's parent has a right to know that their child is in need of an intervention.
